Where do you send your chrome plated metal bits to be un-plated and then re-plated with nickel?

Got any great resources out there?

'Chrome' plating already has nickel plating...you wouldn't (typically) electroplate chrome (or electroless) without the nickel.
You have to chemically (or mechanically) strip the plating (CrNi) before you can replate as you have to reactivate the substrate.
If you don't find a source let me know and I can get it done for you in my shop.

Chrome is soluble in sulfuric acid, but neither nickel nor copper (the substrate plating under the chrome) are.

Simply submersing the part in H2SO4 will strip the chrome but leave the nickel in tact.

That said, if you don't know how to mess with H2SO4, then take this info & forget the whole deal.

It's a nasty process for sure and shouldn't be undertaken unless you have the expertise and proper chemistry and disposal of the same.

Just don't throw the acid into your sink.

Have no worry, forum brothers. The only thing I'm going to throw down is my checkbook.
