View Full Version : Need a Reverb Pedal for Shimmer and Plate/Spring

I've only recently been made aware of the "shimmer" effect used by U2, and many like-minded guitarists. Now I've got a gig where I have to cop that sound occasionally.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a reverb pedal that can do this shimmer effect well, and that also has a decent plate or spring reverb sound too?

I'm not interested in the Behringer or Line6 reverb pedals that do this, and I also can't justify one of the big reverb modelers like the Nova reverb or Eventide units. Is there a middle ground here? Does BOSS make anything that will do both sounds?

Thanks!

For Spring, Plate and Shimmer that's not a Space... you're almost going to have to get the Strymon Blue Sky.

That or maybe the Line 6 Verbzilla.

The Blue Sky has a fantastic plate and shimmer, but I hated the spring mode. Might need to get two pedals, a BSR and a dedicated spring pedal.

Best spring I've heard in a pedal is the Line6 M-series ('63 Spring setting)
Best shimmer & plate is the BSR.

Get the M5 and the BSR and you'll have a LOT of options at your feet; the 'Cave' and 'Particle Verb' on the M-series are really cool.

Strymon Blue Sky serves me up a nice plate of shimmer .

strymon bluesky really lives up to the hype. i will not be flipping mine. not a permanent fixture on my board to cover all the reverbs. it's spring is weak, but htat is because i have vintage fender amps to compare it to..

I say give the Verbzilla a chance. It does all three of these sounds very well.

Verbzilla is pretty good and inexpensive, however there are other pedals that do the job better both sonically and with enhanced features:

- T.C. Electronics Hall of Fame (best value)
- Neunaber WET Reverb (not as versatile, but it's the most natural reverb you'll ever hear)
- Strymon Blue Sky Reverb (most versatile)

Another vote for the Blue Sky. I actually preferred it to the Eventide Space.

My favorite setting on the BSR is Room.

Really? You think?

Gosh... I couldn't get over how fake it sounded. Haven't played the newest one though.

Another vote for the BSR. I love mine! It's never leaving the board (even though I may be getting a stereo WET for Christmas - they'll place nice on together on the same board). :aok

Vote for the BSR. It's the only thing that does exactly what you want.

The Boss RV-5 does all of those sounds pretty well. In a live setting very few people would be able to tell the difference between this and a higher end unit. The modulated reverb setting is very cool as well. It's worth a shot trying it out.

The RV-5 doesn't have shimmer.

Yeah, BSR all the way. I've owned the Verbzilla, Hermida, and Wet also and the BSR is my fav (though the Hermida sounds great too). For me, a reverb has to sound great first of all and second, not mess with the tone when engaged because I use it as an effect, so it isn't on all the time.

The only reverbs with shimmer are:

Strymon BlueSky
Eventide Space
Line6 Verbzilla and Mseries

All the other reverbs mentioned do not. I think the Strymon and Eventide are head and shoulders better than the L6 or beringer stuff to my ear.

^^ FWIW, the Behringer RV600 does it too. Essentially a cheap copy of the Verbzilla, I guess.

I would stand by both the mono and newer stereo WET Reverb versions as being the most natural sounding. Some of the older versions have more sensitivity in the mix control, however they can still be adjusted appropriately for transparency.

Perhaps we hear things differently, however my clients consistently choose the WET Reverb over the other pedals that have been mentioned in this thread because of how organic it sounds and the ease of use.

I see thousands of pedals each year and hundreds of professional musicians that use their pedals in many different contexts and I integrate them into various rigs with a variety of amplifiers and guitars. My experience with the WET Reverb pedal has been that it is very much a chameleon from rig to rig and in combination with other pedals is very stable.

So I have a Timeline but still find myself wanting a reverb with shimmer donut doesn't bounce all over the place all the time. I like the no attack sound with shimmer like I've hear in the blue sky demos - are there any other pedals that do shimmer with it being a delay? I'm assuming it'd have to be a reverb pedal.
I'm using a Pog2 right now in conjunction with the Timeline - should I stick with that or forget the Pog2 and get the Blue Sky?

If you want the best shimmer, you get a Blue Sky. Period. Fact.

IMO. :D

Yeah, the BSR has the most ethereal shimmer out there.

Ok, well it seems I've got an answer. Thanks y'all. Do you think the Blue Sky will then eliminate my need for the Pog2?... since all I use it or is the shimmer setting??

Blue Sky is the best for what you are seeking. The Infinite Plate with Mod is also gorgeous as is the Shimmer Mode.

Man - it just seems like $300 is so much when all ill use is shimmer. Doesn't mean it's not worth it but, yeah.

So y'all don't think I can get really close to it with my Pog2 + Timeline Ice? Like 8 or 9/10 close without having to get the Blue Sky?

Between the ICE setting and the Shimmer setting on the BSR, they sound amazing together. I would go with the BSR, you get the shimmer and also a great plate reverb. I tend to use the ICE setting on my Timeline instead of the BSR's shimmer but they are both great.

Thx for the input! Why do you find yourself using the Ice in the Timeline more than the BSR's Shimmer??
I'm totally convinced to go with the BSR instead if my newly acquired Pog2 but I'm about $100 short for the BSR. I got my Pog2 waaay cheap cuz of coupons and preferred played points at Guitar Center.

Another question - can anyone tell me how the Ice sound suffers from the Shimmer mode on the BSR? An in talking with the blend in the Tineline moved all the way to the right so there's no delay in the mix just the Ice.
Another idea is to put the blend on the ice mode in the middle and then make the delay time really fast so it sounds like reverb / maybe that'll get closer?

The Strymon Blue Sky does shimmer the way the Strymon El-Cap does tape.
I think those are the forte of each and few if any others do them as well respectively unless you go with real tape or high end studio verbs.

I would get a blueSky.

Unless you want to spend upwards of $3k on an AMS 1580, of course :)
