Amp went down again at rehearsal last week, so tried something I hadn't before - my old tri OD as a preamp into PA, with pedalboard.

Set to Fender, it sounded acceptable on it's own, but amazing taking input from strat - Drivetrain 2 - Timmy. And also, the Marshall settign on it's own using bridge/middle setting on strat sounded fabulous.

My YCV40 has become far too undependable.....an my other amp a bit too expensive to gig...maybe I should check out a TM60.......

Man, that's a bummer about the Traynor (I had the wine red version of that amp) but very cool about the Tech 21 pedal, I know their "Character" series have a defeat-able direct switch that provides cab emulation and you can use them into a PA.

The Character pedals are a major upgrade over the earlier Tech 21 modeling. Try a Blonde or a Liverpool set clean with the dirt pedals of your choice.

A major upgrade? So would a Power Engine + character pedal be a better bet than a TM60 in your opinion?

Also - I remember trying a tm60 some years back and being surprised at how little volume was available. Certainly, it was eclipsed in the headroom stakes by the YCV40. Sine I don't always have a monitor wedge in front of me, this could be an issue...would you get away with putting a high-efficiency speaker in one? (I also remember T21 using an own brand speaker but superceded it with a cheap celestion, so presumably they weren't using a full-range unit?)

Yes - I was previously using a TM60 and went to the Character/PE combination. I'm actually going to do the first gig tomorrow night with a Liverpool AND a British, with an M9 in the middle.

Hmmm....headroom is a consideration..not expecting jc120 or twin, but ac30 or Hot Rod Dlx levels would be nice....

Maybe 2 power engines?

I play in a 15 piece band that gets loud - I elevate the PE on a road case and mic it - no issues hearing myself.

Just saw your comment about not always having a monitor - maybe two would be good for you. You can find them used for around $175-200.

Anyone tried the Trademark 120?

The power sections of the TM60 and Power Engine are the same. I'm not sure about your clean headroom issue with the TM60 vs your Traynor as there power levels are pretty similar. You can use a more efficient speaker

The speaker switch to the Celestion70/80 was because the original speaker had been discontinued. We tried a number of different speakers and settled on the 70/80 because it sounded closest to the original. Because our products use speaker emulation there is already a speaker curve before the speaker gets the signal.

I use my PE with our Character pedals but also as an effects cab for a wet dry rig with my tube amps. By utilizing the active tone controls on the PE it's fairly easy to tailor the sound of the cab.

Thanks for getting back, tech21.

Well, in a side-by-side, the Traynor ate the TM for breakfast in terms of clean headroom. The Traynor had a cheap Celestion ('Rocket'?) in it at the time. The tone of the TM was preferable, though.

Is the Character modelling tech a step up from the TM preamp section?

To get max volume and clean headroom out of the TM60 you would need to have set the bright switch off and the drive at noon or below depending on the guitar, the punch should be turned below noon as well and the level and boost up full. Without being in a room with both amps I can only speculate. Sometimes the frequency range will often make one amp "seem" louder than another. This is why Vox's and Marshall's seem louder than Fenders. They have a more barky midrange content.

I wouldn't say the Character series are a step up from the TM preamp as they both employ our SansAmp technology. Some people really like the TM60 and that sound, some people really like our Leeds, Liverpool etc. If you are more of a 1 sound kind of guy and want to use pedals and really like the sound of a specific Character pedal, then the Character pedal/Power Engine route might be the way to go. If you prefer the convenience of a channel switching amp, with boost and reverb and like the tone of the TM60 that is a great way to go.

I recently dusted off my Liverpool, put it in the loop of my GT10, no amp modeling, and ran that to my trusty FBT Maxx2a. I couldn't believe how great it sounded! I set it for ballsy clean and got lead tones either from the 'warm OD' in the Boss, or my Crunchbox also in the loop, before the Liverpool. One of the best clean and lead tones I've ever gotten, and that's after A LOT of gear meanderings (most modelers, high end tube amps, etc). My rhythm guy recently went from a Showman and 4 12 to the Blonde into my FBT Maxx4a. Just amazingly good sounds! If Tech 21 ever made a multifunction footboard with several of the Character circuits for amps and a nice selection of effects, for a mass market $ set point, they could own the realm. imho anyway.... :)

Yes, at a church - very tough to get useable tones. The clean is very muddy on those, and the OD's just don't seem to cut through

Agreed. LP into M13 into a Tech21 British into a PA got lots of people in the store looking to see what I was playing through. Got lots of questions from the store employees. It was a great playing experience :D.

Agreed. I'd be all over it.
