I recently found out that my Peavey Backstage Plus (a 35 watt transistor amp) isn't that bad (which I thought at first) with a nice analog overdrive (I tested this with the analog drives of the Lexicon MPX G2). I went to the shop today to try out some drives and one of them was head and shoulders above the others: the Keeler Designs Push.
This drive has a lot of low mids and because of that a lovely growl. It's pretty tight but in combination of my (DIY) tube screamer really balls to the wall. On the other hand, the Push responds fantastically to changes in volume, so when I play with the volume pot on the guitar it becomes almost clean.
I have a craving of building a small pedalboard for a while and this is the perfect addition the my tube screamer and Dunlop JH1 wah. Hopefully a Ibanez CS5 chorus is coming; I already have one of those in my rack and I really love the sound.
