View Full Version : Do any of you exercise at night?

With my schedule being so hectic, working out has become next to impossible. I already get up at 5 and most nights are interrupted by my son several times (he's young still and awakes often). I haven't had a full 8 hours in over a year, even on weekends because he is an early riser (4:30-6 usually).

My son goes to bed around 8, and I am thinking of doing my weights and stuff from 8:30-9 each night before bed. Bedtime is around 10ish usually.

Adjusting to the new baby was hard last year, but I equally blame me not taking care of myself physically for my always being sick. I think if I can exercise consistently I will be sick less often. I have a lot of job and new baby stress, so that hurts too.

I am wondering if any of you lift weights/work out so late and if affects you negatively in any way.

I'm only about 10 pounds heavier than when he was born, so I feel if I can get back on track I can drop the weight and take care of myself too.

I used to due to a work schedule but I don't anymore.
No problems associated with evening exercise although if you are an insomniac you might find you go one way or the other with it.
You might drop off easier if you are tired OR you might not (because of all the endorphins)

My only evening exercise these days is of the horizontal kind.

I work out at night. As long as I finish about 2 hours before bedtime I'm fine. Actually, it helps me to sleep better.

I take it you don't mean push ups. :D

Hubby and I use to exercise at night after dinner. Instead of sitting down in front of the TV every evening, we'd go downstairs and workout on our various pieces of equipment. Then head upstairs for a shower. This seemed to reeve us up and made for amazing sex!

Just my experience!

Wake up for me last year was being sick so much. I rarely got sick before. But new kid plus stress plus 3-4 hours of sleep a night, I was sick more than I wasn't.

I am determined to change that this year, starting with diet but leaving room to get me back under the weights and on the bike.

Seriously though, usually from 4-8 I am doing dishes, watching my son, doing laundry, and work for my job, so it is hard to get the time in.

I hate to make it sound like I am making excuses, I don't mean too. As I am sure many of you know, no day is the same, so finding a regular time is impossible for me, so I am trying to get into a routine.

I'm hoping a short, intense workout 4-5 nights a week gets me on track.

I think you hit it on the head with the reasons you were getting sick. I don't think working out will help you in that regard, though it's good for you long term.

I vastly prefer working out earlier in the day, but, hell, if you only have time at night give it a go.

I work 2nd shift (3-11) part time, before I hurt my back I'd often run after work, 30-40 minutes. Was actually sleeping pretty well then. But my bedtime is closer to 2 or 3am. I don't know if weight training would've had a different effect than cardio.

Unfortunately, based on research, our bodies are prime for a workout in the early afternoon....but for most people, this isn't practical. And while it's suggested that you exercise at any chance you get (as opposed to not at all), you have to be careful not to overwork your body when you might be fatigued late in the evening. Fatigue is the number one cause of injury...but if you feel good to go then....it's worth the try.

Very true but I'd rather see someone workout a lot at a less ideal time than very rarely at the right time.

Same with exercise- people talk about running being better than cycling etc but if you hate running and love cycling then you'll cycle more than you would ever run.

Ain't that the truth. Choosing an exercise that you will actually do is key.

Sometimes I ride at night in the summer. I can't handle the heat.

Usually 7:30-8. In bed at 11.
The body needs time for the hormones to level out. About 3 hours.

Dusk into evening is my favorite time for running.
Used to do all my gym in the evening as well. Had to lose my weights machine when we moved house 2 yr ago, but until then would often work out at night. It's cooler, and peaceful and relaxing. No ill effects.
May I suggest some Rolling Stones like Tattoo You. Side one is invigorating, side two is chill.

I tend to work out (weights) at noon a few times a week. I teach a fitness class one evening a week as well as Saturday morning.

What kills me is playing hockey late at night...if I have a late game (say, 11pm) then I'll get home at 12:30am and be so wound up that I can't sleep for quite a while. I don't mind so much if it's at the end of the week but if it's a Monday or Tuesday night, it can be a tough week.

I used to work out early in the morning, but the birth of my son has turned my schedule upside down. Now I work out in the evenings some.

Aside from having less energy at night, I haven't noticed any downsides.
