The best way to make a person use a coaster is to bring them their drink WITH a coaster and make a bit of a display putting it right in front of them. Unless they have only half a brain, they will get it.
And please take your boots off at the front door, thank you.

They're in the same group as those who want to play your guitar with dirty hands.

I ask them to use a coaster but the irony is they are a big square (pointy edges) heavy and ceramic coaster that my 16 month old loves to gouge the very wooden table I am asking guests to protect.

I don't get it.
A table is for putting stuff on, yes?
Is it so bad that there are indications that it has been used for it's intended purpose?!
Now, I will always use one in someone else's home, or per their request.
BUT:
My car bumper has scratches.
My pickguard has scratches.
The mat where I wipe my boots is filthy.
Etc.
Well, at least my underwear doesn't have skidmarks, but you get the idea...

If you are a guest and the host requests that you use coasters, you should use coasters.

Your car bumper has scratches so you car won't
Your pickguard has scratches so your guitar won't
The mat you wipe your boots on keeps your floor clean
A coaster protects your furniture, but you get the idea.

Maybe I'm still in a college mindset...
My table protects my floors from spilled drinks!
(I've only recently aquired what civilized folks call "furniture"...)

I do care; I really do.
But suppose you bust your butt to protect these surfaces and then a wall of oily mud and liquid filth plows through your house and puts "a ring" on every thing you left behind in haste?
Fancy looking modern furniture with hidden MDF underneath which blows up, and it seems to more expensive the item was, the less susceptible to restoration it is.
I still use a coaster, but not because it is really necessary. Some of these pieces have been through hell and no ring is gonna make any difference. And the rest can handle it; they were bought with an eye toward what they'd be worth if they got hit with everything. If they can't take it, I don't buy it.

Do you have solid iron furniture?

LOL now that's funny. It's all in the degree of protection we want/need.

Well usually it's my own wife and children, so "slapping them immediately is out of the question." However my guitar player friends get their strings "clipped" when they get up to use the restroom! That'll teach 'em to stain ring my my new coffee table....

I used VH III CD as a coaster, worked like a charm, so yes I agree with their use.

I'm glad someone beat me to it. My best friend is a furniture maker in Vermont and this might be one of our most overly used phrases in regular conversation.

It depends. If it's a POS table with rings all over it (like the plywood one in my music room), I don't care. If it's our Danish teak table in the living room or even worse, the 100 year old mahogany one in the dining room, they better run...and Ms Vee is fast. :D

Ill use a coaster if asked to, but I WILL Not take off my shoes! That should not even be an issue, unless there are muddy ect. And you better leave your shoes on when you come to my house! I dont need your feet funkin' up my living room!
Rant over.

Make sure and give me a cheap cardboard coaster.
I love it when the condensation on my pint glass makes the coaster stick to the bottom. Then, when i pick up the glass, and tilt it for a sip, the wet coaster falls in my lap.
