..... and you are pretty much stuck buying more crap from the store. :huh
Good for the store, bad for the gift receiver
.... and no, you can't take a $85 store credit and buy something for $1 and get $84 in cash, I already tried it :waiting
Remember ppl, buy your gifts with greenbacks and get a normal receipt so at least the gift giver gives a gift that the giftee can gladly give back to get greenbacks for other goods needed or wanted. :red

The biggest ripoff in this area is gift cards. How many of them never get used or only get half used up? That's free money for a business. At least they've cracked down on businesses putting expiration dates on them.

I like the episode of Mad Men when Pete returns the "Chip n' Dip" he got as a wedding gift and buys a gun with the store credit. :-)

And then of course he brings the gun to work. :-)

You've never been able to use gift receipts for anything other than store credit.

I don't see why you would be entitled to anything else.
The point of the purchase was to provide you with a gift.
The goal of the store is to sell merchandise at a profit, to provide revenue for the company, returns to shareholders, etc.
The store is not in the business of providing a free service to hold cash for you until you can pick it up after Christmas. I see no problem with a store allowing returns for exchange or credit only.

Gift card laws are state specific. In some states, unclaimed gift cards and certificates escheat to the state after a set period of inactivity. In some states you can redeem a gift card for cash if the balance is under a certain amount. In some states it is legal to charge a dormancy fee on unused gift cards. It all varies, sometimes considerably, from state to state.

You sound like a store owner. I think the policy is BS, and just another freedom of choice taken away. :red
