..remove that fat gated reverb from all of the snare hits?!

Just heard "Missionary Man" by Eurythmics. What a cool song, but man does that snare sound dated. There are so many others.

Just gated reverb? I wish I could erase all those skinny lapeled jackets, the day-glo stripes, and that dang mullet.

And give me back all that money I blew, literally.

They should have copyrighted it so that only Phil Collins could use it and only on that one song and that anyone using that gated sound would be forced to do awful things to themselves with a fork.

Being the soundtrack of my youth, it brings back too many fond memories for me to want to kill it. ;)

I'd go back to about '88 or '89, bring a copy of Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger with me, force Metallica to listen to all three albums and tell them that could be them in a few years. Hopefully it'd scare it them straight or convince them to stop making music. Or at the very least to never hire Bob Rock and get James to sound like a yodeling idiot.

No. It's simply the sound of that era, just as half the guitar parts circa 1976 had phase shifter on them.

^ You can send the skinny-lapeled jackets, inch-wide ties, and day-glo everything to me!

I'll grow my own mullet

So basically as soon as High n' Dry is in the can, Mutt gets a 9-iron lobotomy?

Go back to the 80s and remove the huge reverb on EVERY drum mic. And then go push up every EQ fader below 500Hz on every console.

I have no idea what you a talking about.

Producer Hugh Padgham. He heard Phil Collins playing drums thru the SSL Listen Mic Compressor.

The whole point of the compressor was so that when a performer was in the studio doing talkback you could hear them if they were talking quietly.

To quote Hugh: ""One day, Phil (Collins) was playing the drums,” Hugh recalls, “and I had the reverse talkback on because he was speaking, and then he started playing the drums. The most unbelievable sound came out because of the heavy compressor. I said, 'My God, this is the most amazing sound! Steve, listen to this.' But the way the reverse talkback was setup, you couldn't record it. So I had the desk modified that night. I got one of the maintenance guys to take the desk apart and get a split output of this compressor and feed it into a patch point on the jack field so I could then patch it into a channel on the board. From there, we were able to route that to the tape recorder."

Older PowerPC Macs and Windows PC can run a free VST:

But the point is: if someone had stopped the gated sound from being massively popular something else equally bothersome and commonplace would have come into popularity.

Just like autotune is now. One artist had a hit with it and everyone else who followed it had to have their hit with it and it just kept going.

It's how popularity and trends can ruin anything even good ideas if overused.

I'd go back in a hurry! Chicks were all in shape, nobody was fat, dudes actually had hair. And ladies wearing Jordache jeans gave you nice long lasting memories.
