I've been playing a Les Paul and Strat for 20 years and while they certainly represent my core tastes, I have this unscratched itch for a "shred" type of guitar. I've never owned anything with a Floyd Rose or EMGs or 24 frets, etc... Reading on here I've seen lots of praise for various Jackson's, Charvel's, Ibanez's when it comes to this genre. I just noticed that PRS has an entry in this field, the SE Torero, and was wondering what you guys think about it? I'm looking to stay around $1000 roughly.

Thanks,
Jeff

I think the Torero holds its own in comparisons with similarly priced Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, ESP's and similar "shred" type guitars.

I bet if you played some side by side, it would be pretty clear which matched your personal preferences for feel, tone and vibe.

I'd add Carvin to the list, but if you're not able to try one out, you may want to opt for one you can.

Of course, buying from a dealer with a good return policy gives you the chance to play whatever guitar you buy using your own rig... and really see how it feels and sounds.

I had one. It was good for what it was, but the neck was way skinnier than I like. I've had a couple of Schecters too. I'd be giving them a serious look if you want that style. The Blackjack ATX FR is a really nice guitar, equal to or better than the PRS, IMHO.

Thanks, I'll check Schecter out. Do you like the SD actives more than the EMG?

Also, what about these tremelos? Is just saying "Floyd Rose" good enough or is there a difference in how one brand makes them vs. another? From what I understand they are just build under license, not actually a Floyd Rose original branded thing, right?

You have several versions of "Original" all of which are supposed to be good, and "licensed" which as I understand it, isn't. I've only used originals. Both the Schecter I pointed out and the Torero have versions of the original I believe and both will stay in tune all night no matter what you do to them. The SD pickups were a bit more lively sounding. I found the EMGs a little dull in comparison. My main beef about the PRS though was the skinny neck. That may or may not appeal to you, but it was way too small for me. Workmanship on both guitars was excellent and both played as well as anything I've ever played at any price.

Well I wasn't able to find a blackjack to play locally, but I was able to find a Torero (wrong color though) and liked it. I got a great deal through Mad Ape (Matt was super helpful and friendly) so I ordered it up. Looking forward to its arrival!
