So I was looking at the Gibson site and now notice that a few models have been changed to katalox fretboards. The sg standard, and the deluxe (I already got one with rosewood.) Never heard of it...oh well just one more option to add to my confusion of what I want.

Must be pretty recent changes, all sites I see still have all of them listed as rosewood, maybe I should have held out for a katalox board Deluxe.

I've got a few boards of Katalox in my wood stash and from working with a bit of it, I'd say it is very similar to some of the ebonies. It's dense, a little more open grained than the ebony I've used and the color is a bit more purple, but it should be a good alternative.
I've not used it for fingerboards so I don't know about its fret-holding ability.
I think Gibson, being over a barrel, is doing a good thing bringing lesser-known woods to market. It might make more commonly available lumber a shot and create a new market in certain areas around the world. Lemons into lemonade and all...

Grenadilla is a great tonewood for clarinets.

What is the light colored wood on the fingerboard of the Bonamassa Studio LP ?
Looked really nice, not quite Brazilian Rosewood, maybe Pau Ferro but less reddish brown and it's a thick slab- at least on the one I played.
What is it ???

Thanks- looks nice, high density, hopefully it holds frets well and sounds great- there may be woods that are "better " in some ways that will emerge.

The new 2012's have the grenadillo fretboard. The 2011 ltd's were rosewood.

Glad I'm not in the market for a new Gibson.

I've got a new Katalox board SG Standard. The guitar is excellent. The board color is a bit lighter than rosewood but the feel and sound is all SG. I have no idea if it makes any noticable sonic difference but I'm loving the guitar and have no regrets.
Since the original post, Gibson has moved to laminated rosewood on the new SGs. I'm wondering of the short run of ebony-like Katalox will make mine a future collector's item! :D
