A friend let me borrow his Dyna Red Distortion. It sounds pretty good, but I have to run the tone control almost all the way down to keep the highs from being harsh/piercing. Is this normal for this pedal?

Not at all! I found it actually had really smooth highs. Neither harsh nor prominent.
Still, it would help to know what gear was used when you experienced this phenomenon.

I use a strat and didn't run into that when I had mine.

Like what the others have said, it's very much the opposite of what your experience. I'm suspecting an accidentally-open wah pedal in your chain.:D

I am using an HSS Strat with. DiMarzio humbucker into a Blues Jr. The BJr has upgraded tubes and a Cannabis Rex speaker. I'm sure some people will say it is the amp, but I have run about 30 other od/dist pedals through it in the last year. I usually run tone controls at noon or back out some highs, but with the DRD I had to keep the tone at 9 o'clock or below.

Yeah - sounds like you've got an issue with the pedal. Send it in! Donner is the man, I'm sure he'll make things right.
Awesome pedal!

Does the tone at 9 give you what you want and your just suprised at the setting or is it still too brite with the tone full down ?
And yes Im just right across the river if you want me to check it for ticks.
