Hay,

I'm a big fan of Glen Buxton and Tony Iommi, both made good use of three-pickup SG Customs, I also think those particular guitars are really sexy, out-of phase pickups interest me too. A Gibson SG Custom goes for astronomical prices that with me being a teen with a part time job, I can't afford.

So how's the quality of the Epiphone G-4000 Custom, every Epiphone I've played has kinda been of horrible quality, is this guitar an exception?

It comes down not to the model, but the individual guitar. I seem to have an exception to the "Cheap Epi" rule in my Epi 61 SG reissue. It played better than some gibsons on the rack that were 3x in price. But the other identical-model 61 reissues on the rack next to mine didn't play nearly as well. I think with Epi's it's best to try before you buy if possible -- more so than with some other brands. Some individual guitars are great; some are not.

Though not much help, i did play the Gibson version of this recently that a friend had and fell instantly in love with it.

Cuirious as to how the Epi version stacks of to the Gibson.

I LOVE mine. It's like the typical import. Plays decent out of the box, take it to your tech for a level and crown and it will play like a dream.

The custom has a chunky neck, and feels like its made of lead (which I dig.) Pickups sound good. Overall I think it's a great guitar.
