His name is Joe Stump, not to well known but I think he plays very good.

The sheer amount of distortion turned me off right away. I couldn't last past the intro riff/

Met him a bunch of times. He teaches at Berklee during the school year & during the summer, on the weekends, he teaches at the store down the street from me (Carlino's in Medford).
Hell of a nice guy & a killer player.

Actually the song had a few good moments. But after 3 minutes I couldn't take it anymore. He sounds like all the shredders I hear in my local store (a touch better though). Maybe Dream Theatre will being having guitar auditions someday.
He's fast and musical. I'd be bored to tears being in his band. I'd rather hear Keith Richards.
IT would be fun to hear what this guy thinks of my playing. Such is life.

The point is if you can play this stuff and play it well, you can play almost anything (yes there are many exceptions) but this is as technically as far as you can go with the instrument.

Just another guy playing fast licks with way too much distortion on Youtube. He does it well, but I found it really hard to listen to for very long.

From my experience:
guys who play like this can only play like this. Their jazz, blues, country, pop will all come out sounding JUST like this. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
The big questions is: Can the guy work with a singer and NOT step on everyone's musical toes? That's the problem I come across with every shredder.

He's been around for a long time, since the late '80s probably. Killer player. Obviously heavily influenced by Yngwie, but there's nothing wrong with that IMO.
I think he has several albums out on Shrapnel. I enjoy what he does. It would be cool to take lessons from him.

A. Yngwie is much better at it
B. I saw no fingerpicking. That right there means it's less than 50 percent as far as you can take the instrument.

There is more to technical ability than speed and dexterity. I've met numerous players that can "shred" that can't play like David Gilmour for example. And I'd prefer Gilmour's technical ability and taste any day.
And I remember Joe Stump from the mid 90s and his ads in Guitar World, or like magazine.
I couldn't even make it through a 1:30 in the clip.....only thing it did for me is make we want to hit stop.

Yngwie is one of my favorite guitar players and I can't stand this guy. His tone is awful in IMO and his music is boring. He's been around a while and yes he teaches at Berklee. I avoided his classes when I was there.

I think Joe is a great player, but i don't really listen to this type of stuff anymore, and when i am in the mood for it, i'd much rather listen to early Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie, or David Chastain...

Guess Im a geezer who doesnt "get it" technically masterful and owns the instrument. For me its missing what I enjoy in music, feeling that I cant relate to. What comes to my mind a midi plugin with the "humanize" function turned off. Talented not my cup of joe Im sure there are those who enjoy it which is the great thing about music there something for everyone.

Tony Macalpine does sound the best out of any of the neoclassical shredders. It's to bad he sorta gave up now...

I doubt this is true. There is more to being a good listenable musician than just knowing how to string practice runs together.
I know a lot of guys who know music scales out the ass and can recite them at blinding speed, but can't even make it through a song and do the song so it sounds musical.

No offence Dude, but you are sooooooooooo far off base it ain't even funny.
The guy is just a shredder. They're $0.02 a 1000
I'd like to hear him show feel like Dave Gilmour, or Mark Knopfler. They'd school him good style. Imo of course:p

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on this. Personally I find it much easier to play the kind of stuff he's doing in the video than the type of music I'm trying to play now. Probably because I grew up with the fast scale, palm muted, metal based stuff. The problem with it for me is that there is little ebb and flow in the music. It's so aggressive throughout that it ceases to say anything significant quickly. Speed is cool, don't get me wrong, but constant quick 8th note over distorted drive stuff fizzled for me after about 25. If you like the scale based guitar music you might check out some old Al Dimeola stuff like 'Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway' from his "Elegant Gypsy" CD. It's really quick scale based music but done about as tastefully as can be done while playing 10,000 notes. No disrespect for Mr. Stump or you. But I'm betting he would have a hard time doing Brent Mason's jazz/country mixes. It's just a whole different deal and the thought that has to go into it, mixing jazz chords and single note complex lines gives new light to the term "mastery".:)

I read an interview somewhere about Joe Stump he said he played a lot of Jazz in Berklee and he quickly lost interest. And he is capable of playing blues; now whether or not he puts his soul into it is personal opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmTP50ImUUw&feature=related
Yes, he does play shred guitar but what I am saying is he can easily play other genres of music I am sure.

Maybe your right, maybe he can. But dude, I wouldn't put much stock in the title guitar master. He's good no doubt but I hear the same deficiency in the second cut as I do in the first. He's no Guthrie Govan, Satriani, or SRV or Gilmour IMO.
Go for it if it's what moves you. Milk him for all the knowledge you can gain. But don't stop there. That's all I'm saying.
Good luck at Berklee. It was my dream to go there after high school way back in the early 80's. But it wasn't an accredited school and my scholarship money wouldn't take me there. So genius that I am I decided to forgo college altogether and I went on the road for several years playing in different hair metal bands.......yeah, that was the ticket.:bonk

joe's been around for awhile. he's a passionate player that has never wanted to do anything but play guitar. he does just that, does it well, doesn't harm animals or celebrities in the process and is kind to his admirers. he's a real musician. i like.

This.
The notion that the ability to play harmonic minor scale sequences at a gazillion beats per minute somehow translates to an ability to play any style of music is misguided indeed.
The most obvious counterexample would be bebop - all the chops in the world don't help with knowing how to play through changes.
