and who just goes to the local guy(s)?
Often here on tgp I see post spewing my tech this, my tech that....blah, blah.
Are they actually your's or not, curiosity is kill me.
I've gone to the same guy forever we are friends I know his family and we hang out sometimes, but he's not "mine", He's the guy I go to.
It just seems that some would try to impress with this implication, in the way that it is presented, so, is he your's or not?

I do most of my own stuff, and I do work for many friends as well...

But when I need serious stuff done, Yes...I have "a guy (http://www.mccurdyguitars.com/)".

I used to have a guitar-tech while I was touring - my wife, actually. Damn, she used to sort everything out for me around shows. From restringing when a string broke mid-set to making sure my rig was set up properly before a show to making sure I had a cold one waiting for me when I got onstage. She doesn't play but she understands guitars better than most players. She helped me put together my new partscaster last year. These days I'm just in the studio (and she's busy being a mom) so I either do my own work on guitars, or have her help out if she can.

Amp-wise I have a go-to guy and I do often refer to him as my amp tech, meaning he's the only guy who gets to touch them apart from myself.

I do my own amp and effects work, mainly electronics. Guitar repair, not so much. :dunno

I go to the same guy when I go to anyone, but he is the local guy as well. But I generally fix all that stuff myself.

I have a guy I go to for guitars and a guy I go to for amps. They're pros and don't have an exclusive deal with me.

Every time I walk into his shop, he's my tech - guitar or amp. You might want to re-word this poll

he's the guy you go to, and you wait for him to work on your gear and pay the bill or, "local guy".
"My Tech" takes my gear fixes or adjusts it and hands it back or puts it in it's place waiting for me, while he's waiting for his paycheck from me

or
you're a Pro Tech
or
you do it yourself because vou've learned or are learning.

on guitars
or
amps/other
not that tuff, the poll is public and multiple options, more than one choice may be selected

I do all of my guitar work. If you play 'em, I think you need to know how to fix 'em.
I've owned a guitar since 1964.
I do some amp work but I'm not a real tech. I can do cap jobs, check tubes and I know quite a bit about speakers.

I used to have a guy and then he died. Then I found a new place everyone raved about. They were OK but not as good on some things I could do myself.

that's the way I would tend to take the "my tech" term, but there are members here that make it seem like they (the tech) slides down a pole when they break a string. And I do realize there are touring pro musicians here, but I think y'all know what I getting at:noevil

I'm a techniCal guy. Build hot rods. Drive what I build. Got into guitars again. Mod my own stuff and will build my own guitar from scratch soon. I'm a learner and a do what I learn.

The techwork on my amps I trust only one guy with and I have to drive 400km's up and down to go there but it's worth it. Because his work is so good and roadworthy I only go there once a year or so. The guy is one of the best in my country; I play a preamp he designed/build ( 20 years old and on the road, only once a small problem!!), he maintained/modified my old Marshall head and rebuild my pedalboard; no hum/hiss anymore and no tonesuck!! On top of that; he is a very nice, trustworthy guy: Ernst Fliek.

For the guys in the Netherlands/Belgium/Germany: Ernst is the go to guy a.f.a.i.c.

This^ when I use the term "my Tech" it is just in reference to who I go to, I am not trying to "Impress Anyone"! Yes, the proper term would be "The Tech that repaired/fixed, etc. my guitar. OR the Tech I go to suggested XYZ.....

I can do minor things when it comes to guitar/amps, but I know my limitations. I'm very lucky to have two of the best techs in the buisness near by.

Phil Jacoby - Philtone Guitar Co.

Pete Cage - Cage Amplifiers

I do basic stuff myself, but have a guy I go to for anything else/electrical.
He charges me next to nothin and does good work. He's more a friend than anything else to be honest.
He also fixes my pooters.

I do ALL amp and guitar work for myself and a few friends/clients who are pro full-time musicians. I make way too much doing my day job to consider turning pro, and I'm not interested in going on the road, neither. I do stage tech for friends when asked, if they have a big local gig and need me, but I do not lift anything heavy - I ain't no roadie. Someone else can schlep the Hammond!

Me, too.

I'm looking for a pro though:

A pro player to play these guitars better than I have. :rotflmao

Nobody is gonna buy these things based on an MP3 from me!

I have a guy that slide down a pole, runs across the room in a superman cape to replace my busted string during a over fog on the stage. He liked the effect :D

When I was still out there jamming (stopped playing out about a year ago), I would get the call to fill in for the missing or sick people. My friend, and sound man roadie would guitar tech. He would unload, setup my stuff, tune em up and I would play. He is a great friend and I can't thank him enough for helping me out for the years he helped. He made me look great. Thanks Tim H. You're my hero.

There is a local guy I started using for repairs on my amps because he is very good. I still do my own guitar stuff and do still lightly tinker with my amps.

I have "teched" for people, but do not have my own "tech". I have a couple of great repair guys/incredibly talented luthiers that I trust with projects and stuff, but do a lot of stuff/damage to my own gear.

There's also a guy I go to for finish work/refins because he's the best.

Most amp-related issues - beyond the basics - not for me. I'll take those to a qualified amp guy.

Calling a repair guy "your tech" makes you sound like a wannabe rock star, unless you ARE a pro musician that has a guy on the payroll to do your stringing, tuning, setups, gig-related repair and quick saves onstage. Just an opinion, so don't all you basement players start getting all worked up and stuff! :D

I used to have a tech and then I moved. He didn't move. So now I only have a tech when I play in his state. Actually "tech" is a stretch - He took guitars out of cases and put them away and an occasional new string. I think he sold at least 2 guitars of mine without my consent. I guess it evens out - I never paid him any more than food/drinks.

Yeah, he's my tech. I don't tell him this because if I do he might freak out and run away. I reinforce his illusions of independence by letting him work on other people's guitars for money. Poor fool really seems to think he has his own shop. But he's actually just mine. Please don't tell him about this.

It makes *some* people feel important to imply that their local setup guy is only on retainer for them. :bonk
