I scored an Avatar 2x12 cab with the oval open back on craigslist for a really good price. I didn't need it, but after selling the speakers it came with, my net cost was very little.
I decided to try and match a lower efficiency (quieter) 10" and 12" in my new 'project' cab. I bought one of the 12-to-10 adapter rings from Mojo and began experimenting.
I wound up with a Celestion G12-65 and a Weber DT10 and this combo sounds fantastic with Marshall, Fender and D-style circuits. Disclaimer: I love teh mids, so YMMV.
Anyone looking for lower-efficiency speakers to use with NMV amps, or anyone wanting juicier mids might consider either or both of these speakers.
So the 'project' cab has now become probably my favorite.
