That's a tough call. In this market, I think he got extremely luck as a seller. Must have needed the money, but then again I can't see anyone paying more even in a better economy.

Eh, given the right collector, they'll turn a profit on it. The letters from Les Paul really set it apart from other collectibles.

So if they took it in at $90K, will they price it at $1M?

What I didn't understand is no one bothered to pull the cavity cover to check for virgin solder joints etc. The guitar had an input jack repair also. I was also surprised that no one pulled any of the 3 HB's to ascertain that they were original and PAF's. They were missing their covers too. Oh well.

y'all know that show is staged, right?

Word is that this whole Mary Ford thing was set up by Cowtown Guitars in LV (with whom Rick Harrison has done other staged guitar deals)

might want to read this..... http://centraltendencies.com/2011/03...stars-is-fake/ (http://centraltendencies.com/2011/03/pawn-stars-is-fake/)

I watch that show on occasion and am always amazed at what a low price people will sell stuff for. I'm always thinking, "Dude, put it on Ebay and you will have double or triple the money in a week!"

That said, I have no idea what that guitar is worth, but if Pawn Stars is giving $90,000 it has got to be worth a lot more.

You mean......they didn't really run into Bob Dylan walking down the street?

The show is clearly cut for television. They more than likely checked that stuff out. My guess is that the majority of the inspections take place off screen. They leave enough "history" in it to give it a place on the History Channel and the rest is edited for entertainment.

it's more than "edited"....it's staged

Completely staged.
Complete fiction.

Maybe Chum Lee will chime in; he's a casual poster here.

Not a bad deal. He could have held out until a guitar show and one of the big dealers would have told him what a piece of junk it was and offered him $25,000.

Obviously it's staged. Would you really want to watch a show about all the boring crap that gets brought into a pawn shop (old video games, dvds, guns, and busted electronics)?

That doesn't make the show any less entertaining. I was just making the point that whoever really inspects their purchases gives them a more thorough look than what gets shown on film.

my point was that there's no "purchasing" going on at all.....

It's theater

The fact that the sellers are perfectly happy to take the Pawn Shop's own handpicked experts evaluations of their items is a dead giveaway that the show is fake.

I can see it making them a profit as we all know celeb owned guitars seem to bring suprising money. They timed the auciton perfectly with the episode didn't they? These guys know how to maximize profit for sure.

On another note, is it true that Billy Gibbons really turned down $5,000,000 CASH for Pearly? That's a huge number. But then again it's Pearly Gates! I didn't realize Heaven was SO expensive! :omg

...Word is that this whole Mary Ford thing was set up by Cowtown Guitars in LV (with whom Rick Harrison has done other staged guitar deals)...First thing I thought when I read the title of this thread was "If I had Mary Ford's SG, the LAST place I'd try to sell it would be a pawn shop." But, as others have pointed out, that applies to just about anything.

They're now within about 2K of what they paid for it; probably some of the cheapest advertising prices in the world!

It was on the market for a LOT less this time last year.
