I really actually can't stand the chorus of this song, but that's not the point of this thread...

I'm after another guitar and want that tone (at least in the ballpark) in the intro guitar. Any help on that? I wanna say it sounds like a semi hollow? Nothing close to conclusive though

One of the best songs ever - a heard that part was played on an acoustic.

the verse lyrics are awesome! I think I've heard it so many damn times the chorus drives me nuts.

Ditto on the acoustic. IIRC, it was played into a cheap, tube driven tape recorder with the input overdriven.

It's in Keef's book.

It's an acoustic, recorded on a cheap Philips cassette recorder and then run through the console. Same deal with "Street Fighting Man."

Good luck getting that sound. ;)

Keith said that this, and street fighting man, were recorded with acoustics overdriving the board (Or overdriving a smaller tape deck, I forget which)

Guitarwise, you might try a cheap Gibson acoustic from the 60s -- like an LG-1 or something. Try recording it with an SM-57 and a cheap tube mic pre, with the gain cranked. That might get pretty close.

One the all-time great guitar tones, btw!

definitely an awesome tone. I wish it was more obtainable, someone should put THAT tone in a box!

Not the same sound exactly, but a P90 equipped guitar through a Fender Amp can get you in the right ball park vibe-wise

The vocals start to annoy me at the end of the song, like I said, I've listened to this particular song SO many times, and the stones in general for 20 some years

I remember hearing that a guitar in Nashville tuning was used there.

Apparently there are no electric 6 strings on that record, according to Keef, who also laments the fact that you can't buy a cassette recorder without a limiter in it. You can hear the tape wow a bit in the intro.
Maybe a Green Bullet inside the guitar would be a good starting point.

PM Andy Z at Line 6. I think he's got a patch for that for your Pod! :p

On another note, I've always been fascinated by Bill Wyman's bass line. It kind of sounds wrong to my ears over the chords.

Can anyone explain what's going on there.

He's just sitting on the B. Johnny one-note. That's what makes the riff work, at least to me! (I've never liked how they play it live) I've had SUCH a hard time over the years getting bass players to understand that and just do it. Ha!

for some reason I thought it was a Gibson Hummingbird (open D or E?) w/ capo, but can't remembr why. maybe becasue i heard Keith used a Hummingbird a lot and I just assumed . . . .

Agreed, when the bass plays along with the main riff, it doesn't sound as good to me. I like the studio and the Ya Ya's versions the best.

On Rock N Roll circus, Brian Jones is playing the prominent guitar part, if i remember right it looks like he is either tuning the e down to D or using some other alternate tuning.
I don't remember what guitar he was playing.

The song that got me into music. A total life changer, nothing has been the same since, lol. Thanks Keef!!

Btw...I think the studio version of this song is pretty darn close to perfect.

Lot of guitar parts on Jumpin' Jack Flash.

The first opening guitar is a Acoustic in Nashville tuning and gets joined by another guitar tuned in open E (or open D with a capo).

There are probably Electric guitars on Jumpin' Jack Flash and Acoustic guitars recorded onto a cassette and then replayed and recorded through a speaker.

The main riff is probably a open E (or open D with a capo) tuned Acoustic and Electric.

The Chorus has a country like high guitar part basically played on the top 2 strings (B and E) and is probably Electric.

Keith plays bass on the studio version of Jumpin' Jack Flash and Bill Wyman apparently plays some organ at the end.

Street Fighting Man is all Acoustic though.

street fighting man is such a good song.

I take back what I said how I can't stand the chorus of this song after listening again-
but for those of you who have been geeking out at the fact that there's some possible way I don't love every part of the song, on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQSGw0hMd_I

Go to 2:46, the repition of jumpin jack flash its a gas in that tone just never vibed with me. The chorus I DO like, my mistake

It's open E
And Keef is on bass, even though Bill came up with the riff on organ while jamming with Charlie and Brian, song is only credited to Mick and Keith.
