View Full Version : Looking for a Dual Tubescreamer

I hate to ask this question because it seems I could find the answer with more research. But I don't know the name of what I want, so finding it is a needle-in-the-haystack situation.

I've got an Analogman King of Tone, and I like it pretty well. I particularly like the two independent circuits in one small box.

What I would like is something like the KoT that has TS808 circuits in it instead. I need more mids and a creamier distortion.

I do NOT want a tweaked screamer that has extended bass and a glassy distortion (like most mods). I want a classic TS808 sound.

Does anyone make such a pedal? A dual-circuit, reasonably-sized overdrive with two identical TS808s in it?

Or would this be a custom job?

Thanks in advance!

Keeley made a dual TS-9 in the original Ibanez box, called the Frankenscreamer. I have one - it has a switch for toggling between his Baked and Plus mods. Way cool.

I also have a dual TS-9 (in the original Ibanez box) modded by Vaughn Cost with 2 vol, 2 gain knobs, 2 Tri switches for bass boost and clipping choices. Also, way cool.

That's a great price - is it pretty accurate to a Ibanez 808/9? The overdrive channel said it has more body - does that mean it has a different voicing/eq? Or can you dial in a normal TS9?

i haven't owned that pedal yet but when i read more body i read more bottom end like more bass. i know its not exactly what op wanted but from what i read two ts-808's or ts-9s cut alot of bass...

What about the SRB808? I think it has some toggle options, but doesn't it have 'stock' 808 sounds?

Right, that is what I read too - I emailed them to find out cuz that seems like an interesting pedal. I run 2 TS9 Silvers, but for $70, if it can do the trick, I might have to give it a try. I definitely don't want more bass though.

There was a JAM pedals dual tube screamer in the emporium - they apparently make a good pedal.

Um, why not just get two TS808s and slap 'em on your board and be done with it?

Foxrox Zim-two pedals, vary the order, parametric EQ on one.

Or, build it for MUCH cheaper-two BYOC kits and a bigger box...

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone!

For me, size and cost are important considerations, so custom work is probably beyond my means.

The Visual Sound Double Trouble has exactly what I need at a good price point. If only it were better looking! (sorry if anyone likes the Visual Sound look).

That is beautiful. I wish Analogman would make something just like this in a KoT-size enclosure.

That's probably what I will do, but this would be larger than a KoT-size enclosure and would require two power supplies.

You could probably do 1 power supply and a smaller enclosure I suspect. For one power supply, you might need a smaller voltage doubling circuit, then split it between the two pedals (as long as there is enough MA). Though I am not techy so I could be wrong about that.

If two tubescreamer circuits were put into one enclosure, you could power them both off of one dc jack.

True - it's a pretty low current draw circuit. You could throw in a boost as well and still power the thing.

BYOC 808 kits are $69. If I were looking to do this, I would buy two kits from BYOC, a larger enclosure from Small Bear Electronics and heat up the soldering iron. Great tutorials on the Beavis Audio website as far as things you can do with switches, circuit mods...etc.

I've had one of Vaughn's mods for many years, (same mods as yours)...it's the only pedal I've hung onto for any length of time besides my Teese Picture Wah.

I wonder if Vaughn is still doing them?

Yeah, that Tri-mode mod is the sh*t! I had his site bookmarked but it's a dead link now. Maybe try sending him a PM?...he's VaughnC here on TGP.

I sold my LDO because Vaughn's TS sounded just as good and was more versatile with 2 TS's in one box! I don't have it on my board anymore as I use it as a self contained "pedalboard" when I don't have room...or just don't feel like hauling the board.

How about this from GFS( Biyang)??

I know it's cheap, but not cheap (I own a GFS Brownie (mod-Rat type) and a Biyang 'Mad Driver' (Tube Screamer w/clipping switch) and both are well-made, sound just great, just don't cost a lot of $$!

OP said custom builds were out of his price range.

For 2 basic TS pedals, that thing (though very nice looking) is about $330 US at current exchange rates.

+1 for the Double Trouble

It might not look all that great, but it will last and so will the silent switches. VS's tubescreamer circuit sounds great, the Bass Boost is a nice feature, and they can be had cheaper than almost anything mentioned. VS doesn't get much love around here - from what I can tell, because people don't like their enclosures - but they make quality products which are now backed by a lifetime warranty.
