Roine Stolt's main solo on the Flower Kings' song Garden Of Dreams, particularly from their DVD Meet The Flower Kings:

MTLTtCkvkAk

Generally almost anything Roine does sends shivers down my spine. It's a shame that his current project, Agents Of Mercy, just has no magic about it.

I think this will always be my favorite guitar solo. It's certainly been the benchmark for me since I first heard it in the 70's. I listened to it so much over the decades that every nuance in this recording is part of my DNA.

Favourite guitar solo? Hey, ask me a tough one. (Like I can pick one favourite?) But if you're looking for beautiful guitar solos, you'd have an awful tough time getting better than this . . . there may have been better blues played over the years (and this gentleman played quite a bit of those himself), but blues guitar just doesn't get more simply beautiful than this.

Mike Bloomfield . . .

Scotti Hill's guitar tone is massive. Sounds like another verse of the song. I like how the first note blends perfectly with Bach's voice and that harmonic/feedback trick he does at 3:14 blew my mind the first time i heard it.

Been listening to this one for 30+ years. It's the first solo that came to mind when I saw this thread.

A really young Larry Carlton with the Crusaders. No explanation needed. I mean it's Larry with Stix Hooper, Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and Pops Popwell. Just listen to Larry take off at 1:30. Beautiful. Enjoy.

I was a huge fan of the Adrian-or-Janick-then-Dave solo in the Trooper but things got really awesome when Adrian re-joined the band and it became Adrian-AND-Janick-dueling-complimentary-wankfest-then-Dave.

The Trooper (solo starts around 2:07)
354MU3l-25M

This one also gets my blood pumping, especially as it comes out of the creepy middle section.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner (start around 7:00 for context; solo starts around 9:17)
WfNAiPpApx4

This also needs to be included because the live versions are so ridiculously awesome.

Veteran of the Psychic Wars (solo starts around 3:34 and gets stupid good at 5:14)

I spent a lot of time watching this guy play with Zero and SK&F in San Francisco and Oregon back in the mid '90s. His tone probably defines my high school and "college take one" years more than any other guitarist. Between Steve and the other local guitar hero James Hetfield it became clear: the Explorer shape was up there with the B.C. Rich Mockingbird as the baddest of all time.

Steve Kimock in Zero "Chance in a Million" (solos start at 5:27 and 7:28)

YES! I love Sum 41, i wish i could have seen them live when Brownsound was in the band, but Brown Tom is a great guitarist too, i saw them just before Screaming Bloody Murder was released. Very cool show and i really like Screaming Bloody Murder, it's a great mix of Does This Look Infected and Underclass Hero.

Here's one of my favourite songs from The Sums and it's got a ripping solo at 1:20. This songs is just awesome!

Maroon 5 - "The Sun"
This is probably one of my favourite songs of all time. Maroon 5 are the reason i started playing guitar seriously. I spent so much time trying to get their tone and play like James Valentine. I don't want to know how many times i've watched that concert! I think this is the song shows what Maroon 5 are all about. And Adams' SG :drool (he can rip it too!)
Solo at 4:29. James Valentine is probably one of my three biggest influences.
1s73axhrrSc

Incubus - "Sick sad little world"
Mike Einziger of Incubus is one of my other top three favourites. "Sick sad little world" just shows so many sides of what Incubus are. I really like how Mike goes from very hard metal type playing to funky and jazzy styles. His note choice in soloes are always interesting without being "look at me i'm playing out of the box"

One of Ben Kenney's solo songs. His solo work is just amazing! Great voice, great grooves and great guitar playing. That guy is just crazy talented! And that bass tone!!!! It's just insane! I'm experimenting a lot to get it. Helped by getting flatwounds, i don't think i'm ever going back to roundwound strings ever again, flatwounds just sound great! Anyway...

And finally, I must agree with the earlier post from the first page about the solo from Skid Row's "I Remember You". One of the the best from the 80's. From the same era, Vivian Campbell definitely tears it up on "Rainbow in the Dark" and you can't go wrong with the Scorpions "No One Like You" either.

Fripp.

Fripp.

there is some thought that rudolph is the soloist as it approaches his style more...although both claim to have played the solo in interviews.

some debate followed...

Interesting, I never knew there was any debate about it. The section from 2:10 to about 2:30 sounds very Fripp to me (he even plays one of his signature licks around 2:16). Though I can't say I really know Paul Rudolph's playing, aside from his work with Eno.

This Dweezil guitar solo in Zombie Woof is one of the best guitar solos I've heard in at least 10 years.

Phil Manzanera always under rated.

nice to see Leslie West and Paul Kossoff get a mention!

i will have to check his solo cd out! i havent heard anything from them since great destroyer.

alan is a super cool guy. intense and laid back at the same time.
i've always liked curtain and things we lost in the fire (albini's production and zac on bass made a big difference to me).

the new one, C'mon, is sweet.
I've got some buddies from Duluth who know them, but I've never met him. Everybody tells me he's an interesting dude...

This is Leslie West from Mountain, early 70's. Two solos, equally good. At 2:45 and 3:59, but you should listen to at least a little before them, to get the mood.

This is perhaps the best guitar solo I've ever heard, and I am EXTREMELY choosy. It is all feeling. There is no showy, fast playing at all. Listen to every note, because the nuances are very important.

I've never heard a solo this good, with two possible exceptions- Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun on Band of Gypsys and Wes Montgomery, A Day in the Life. :)
