I love her version of the National Anthem, but this is the way I first saw Whitney:

Df5aaUbRx_s

She had it all there. The total package, and she didn't over sing every song like a lot of other "diva's" out there.

Drugs suck.. RIP Whitney,
Jeff

Good God, what a VOICE. If that's over-singing then Whitney could over-sing everything as far as I'm concerned.

She and Amy Winehouse --- similar stories: massive, early success, marriage to a drug-using bad boy, an insistence on sticking with him and running fast with him as a sign of loyalty and devotion, decline, rehab, comeback attempts, public embarrassments, and then one day it's over.

She had a gift, and used it to effect at the beginning of her career. She abused her gift more and more as she got older and more involved in all the evil things that eventually killed her.

Even though her music is not for me, she was an artist who helped contribute some songs make peoples lives better. I hate it when creative people die.

The saddest of stories and sadly all too common. Some people are given a gift of music by providence and sometimes those people cannot handle the "non-music aspects" of the business and the difficulty of being under an hourglass 24 hours a day. RIP.

Like a lot of guys I used to have a crush on her back in the day. I thought she was pretty hot. Such a beautiful and talented woman. I also remember many of her songs and where I was in my life when I first listened to it. Her songs are such a part of our culture that they are a part of all of us to some degree. She left a strong impression on all of us through her music and her voice. She will be missed greatly.

Sometimes it seems success at an early age just doesn't fit some folks. Another one bites the dust. She had a great instrument and was a lovely young woman.

She had one of the most incredible voices ever in music. Even if her style is not something you listen to with regularity, you have to admire her talent as a musician. She has been an influence to so many vocalists. Sadly, she had a tortured soul it seems also. RIP Whitney Houston.

Umm, it's not clear who got whom into harder drugs. Ms. Houston was not the character she played in "The Bodyguard." She had a dark side. Do some research before making a statement like that.

"Do some research"? Tell us, where does one go to find out which stars are doing drugs, and when they started doing them?

No disrespect intended, but I agree. Stevie Wonder invented it, but as the originator, got away with it. Everyone who copied...I do not want to hear the vocal gymnastics.

I can never figure out why folks get so defensive about someone they never met? If she touched your life with her music, fine; express your feelings. But if others comment contrary to your feelings, they are not attacking you personally, y'know.

It's the black gospel singing tradition, or so it seems. Gospel singers are like shredder guitarists. It's just what they do.

You know, the music I hold most dear to me is far afield from Whitney's pop at her prime, but, my God, how sad. Very early success and a life with blood- and soul-suckers around her takes its final toll.

I don't think the problem is "blood & soul suckers." I think the problem is living in a bubble in which you never hear the word "no", you have your every whim indulged, and you're surrounded by enablers and sycophants.

From the surface, as an outsider, I can agree that the way in which some Religious African Americans seem to parent their children in a certain manner.
I would agree that Ms. Houston had a dark side that she seems to get in touch with as she matured as an artist. Her 'fall' seemed dramatic to the world. It has more to do with a 'machine' that likes to watch innocence whether it be accurate or not. Eventually she made some artistic leaps and it was fun to watch.

I think he was trying to say that some styles of upbringing tend to stifle certain behaviors and personalities [and senses of reality], and when the said person finally lets loose, they REALLY let loose.

I think then he followed it with the "some of us can't turn away from a trainwreck" analogy.

But I'm jest guessin'.:huh

I'm relieved that I don't have to be the one to break the silence on that topic. Whitney was an astonishingly capable vocalist and when she first came out with all the guns blazing it was like a "whoa" moment and something new at least to pop radio. Apart from the melisma, she always sounded like she was projecting hard to blow the hair back on the people in the last row (or the laste pew?) I'll never know if it was she herself, or the producers or label or what telling her to do that as her trademark, but it seemed like she was on the afterburner a lot. But to my tastes, it should have been just one arrow in the quiver.
