Nice. LOL
I always thought judging Toto by 'Africa' was like Judging Van Halen by 'big bad bill (is sweet william now)'

I think Africa is pure pop bliss.
It still stands up today.
You could set a drink on that melody. Timeless.
Singing is fantastic, harmonies are glorious.
What's not to like? It's not cool because it was a huge hit?
:mmm

I'm a fan of Africa and Toto but agree they are two different things.

You missunderstand. I'm not slamming the song at all.
I'm saying you can't judge Toto by that tune.
People frequently dismiss Toto because of that song.
Hense my comparison to VH and Big Bad Bill.
Imagine if that's the only VH or Toto tunes you ever heard, and dismissed them due to those.
you'd have missed acres of good music.
I'm a HUGE toto fan. Africa is cool, but it's like the 8th best tune on the album.

Only song in history of recorded music that uses the words Kilimanjaro and Serengeti in the same verse. :aok

Don't take it personally......but I make it a policy not to hook up with guys named "big mike".

Hmm, looking at this list, maybe the 80s were the decade of the Cheesy Comebacks?

Is there a cooler moment from the 80's than the end vamp of that tune? The 'jam to fade out'.

Now that's a shuffle.
They should play it at Half Time.
That would be purdie cool.

The line is actually "I BLESS the rains down in Africa" .
Enjoy...

And I find that most people argue with you when you tell them that, even though it's true. It seems like 'miss' seems to fit better with the song anyway. Unlike Hendrix's "'scuse me while I kiss this guy". Which my friend Dave would love singing anyway and chase me across the stage with lips in full pucker.
I do remember a guy in high school who misheard a Boston line, and we gave him shit for it...
"I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my piece of pie."

This strengthens the argument that there are a ton of musicians out there who we'll never know about. I've a friend who is absolutely killer on mandolin and also plays guitar--he's an oldie like myself and so chances are very high that you'll never ever hear about him.

Love Toto...Jeff Pocaro laid down some of the best grooves, the king of playing for the song.

The only song I know of with a Pre-echo. (In the last chorus the high "I'm going to take some time" before the actual line.)

Wow. I thought it would be a weak cover like you normally get with a "Here's my bands version", nope chills. Super impressed.

That original post is just hilarious....love it!
The video is inspiring. Wonderful voices and harmony. Way better than the usual cover. It would also be cool if they had some bongos going.

Liked them. Dissed by Rolling Stone, who thought that the only purpose of rock music is to dis the Man.

Was the bass player using a harmonizer on his voice?
Sounds like it.
