Nobody thinks much of the Monkees anymore. Used to love the TV show. Davy Jones died of a heart attack at 66.

rubber soul rang in my adolescence right after my mother relocated us to new england (1 yr in medfield, mass, & 4 yrs in kingston, nh), & the monkees splatted across our screens at the beginning of all that. they were post-strawberry fields, pre-sgt pepper's, & i raised the beatles banner loudly, at the time, in protest to all my peers (mostly female ;)) who went monkee krazy, my boys no longer being the apple of their collective eyes, or yesterday's flavour.
i would have HAD to be completely dead, though, to not fall under the spell of all those boyce & hart treasures, for it all to not have left an indelible impression on my hormone-ridden psyche, so it is with GREAT sadness that i'm alive to see the end of davy jones, the guy who sang "daydream believer..."

my first band (1967) was my friend Morris (drums) and me (BAD guitar) playing Monkees songs --- we were way ahead of the White Stripes -- RIP Davy, sad day.
My last band (UnderCover, '06-'09) did a good version of "Stepping Stone".

RIP Davy. As I kid, I grew up watching The Monkees and inherited some flex records that came off the back of cereal boxes.
When I started buying albums, I got The Monkees Greatest Hits on vinyl.
Later caught one of their early reunion tours (sans Mike) at Great Adventure with the Grass Roots and Hermans Hermits! Great memories.

not the way it should happen, but The Monkees are back on the Billboard Top 200 with the greatest hits collection. anyone remember the short-lived Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart? Boyce and Hart wrote a good deal of The Monkees tunes. Here's a fun bit from Mike Douglas show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMazB9tHmIU

It's funny, but Davey's passing really weighed on me. I think it's because, having been of such a young age, The Monkees really made a great impression on me. Besides that, those songs were just fantastic with many of them still holding up very well, to my ears anyway. And hearing Daydream Believer always takes me back to a wonderful time and place -- what a great voice he had for such a wistful tune.
Davey's gone, and many of us, his original fans are getting old. But that's how it works, huh? At least we still have the music and the memories.
RIP, Davey.

I was on a 2-1/2 training ride today and for about the first hour "Daydream Believer" kept running through my head.
