I've been looking for one of this run for a while now. Really happy I found one. Seems to be pretty rare. Anyway, here she is.

Awesome! My 3 Custom Shop Relics are such well made, great sounding guitars....I was happy I took a chance on the first one, otherwise....I would have judged a book by its cover....and missed out on some amazing guitars.

Is that a Philip Sayce tribute strat? I heard that some were made without his involvement. I haven't googled Sayce's strat, but it sure looks similar.

Does SRV-style Figure 8 strumming cause that upper bout wear?
Seems you see that with the turbo blues crowd the most.

Psssh! I like my guitars to look brand new after 50 years of use. Almost like they have never been played at all. Not so much as a tiny ding or scratch on them. If my guitars have even the most invisible sign of use, I will sell them.
:sarcasm
NICE STRAT BTW!! LOVE IT!

I happen to like some relics, but that one is over the top for me. That said, the builder did a hell of realistic looking job.
Just wondering- do female guitarists ever refer to their instrument as "he"?

is Kenny Wayne Shepherd a 'turbo blues' player ?
I only ask because I've not heard much of his music but IIRC his 61 Strat has the paint worn off in kind of a similar way.
The OP's guitar is lovely BTW.

Sure, but a relic'd guitar isn't the same as an old beat up guitar. To use the jeans analogy, it's a pair you just bought and sandpapered.
To each his own for sure. No problem. I like taking reasonable care of my stuff, though. I've had and gigged with some of my guitars for over 35 years but I could never imagine letting one get like that.

No, but it is close if done well. There are lots of old guitars that look like that. Jeans sandpapered.....come on ! A Murphy aged Les Paul does not look sand papered, nor does a good Custom Shop relic. If you dont like relics, dont buy one. But those of us that do appreciate a well done relic do so because we love a well played, worn, vintage guitar. If you dont understand ok, thats fine. Just move along.

Anyone that's experienced normal actual wear can't relate to these weird looking never-happen-in-reality "wear" patterns. Not normal. Not realistic. But as you say, enjoy!

If this is really the way Philip Sayce treats his guitars, I don't want to know how he'd treat his woman.
This instrument isn't "reliced." It looks like it's an abuse victim.

Olympic white / vintage blonde rosewood relics got to be among the best looking strats ever in my book. To be honest, I'd prefer it didn't have the huge surface mising finish above the pickguard, but it looks very cool and I bet it's a killer instrument, which is what counts most. Congrats!

Oh, this is an argument that gets repeated over and over... Just because YOU don't wear an instrument's finish in a certain way doesn't mean others wouldn't - I always thought finish worn in the inside of a cutaway looked extremely fake until I managed to scrape up my Tele exactly there...
FWIW, the OP's guitar wear pattern is modeled after Philip Sayce's "Mother", which is a '63 and by his words "I bought Mother 10 years ago, and she didn't have a scratch on her. Every mile on this guitar has been earned."

Oh no, Sayce isn't going to start playing Les Paul's because the Custom Shop 'ripped him off' is he?
If I weren't typing this on my phone I'd add one of those 'stirring the pot' icons...
To the OP (and the Custom Shop as well): AWESOME STRAT!!!

I think it's do-able in 10 years. The guitar had dried up 40 year old nitro when he got it. :messedup Most people would baby a 40 year old guitar. Don't think you would get the same results with a new nitro or poly guitar :dunno

Just watch Sayce play and you can quickly see how he's gonna wear a guitar MUCH more quickly than a normal, everyday player.

Honest question....
Do they "wear" the frets too? Or is it brand new fret wire unworn?

Someone a few posts back mentioned that they don't wear the frets in the relic process but thats not true. I have a 65 relic strat and there was a bit of fret wear when I got it, I've also seen this on other relic strats as well.
I personally don't like that aspect of the whole relic thing, on my guitar one of the machine heads is a little messed up from being "reliced", still totally functional but when your a bit OCD these things can bother you.
