I've been running an HD500 through a pair of 2x12 Tech 21 Power Engine 60s, with very good results.

What do you guys think of running the Ethos in front of the HD500, with the Ethos as a preamp and the HD mainly for effects?

It should work well. I just ran mine last night for some late night low volume practice using a digitech ipb-10 just for effects.
It sounded great. The Ethos has a good speaker sim output and I was running through that output into the Digitech and then into the mixer where I listened through the studio monitors and then through an EV SxA 250, a FRFR floor monitor I used to use with lots of other modelers. It certainly sounds as good as my PodHD 500 did through the same amplification.

I don't know about the Tech21 stuff as far as if they have a FRFR kind of output or if they have their own 'guitar cab' kind of flavor so you may or may not want to make use of the speaker sim output running into them. Not really a problem since you have the choice...or even can run both at the same time.

Turn off the cab sims on the HD500. If you ran it in the HD500s loop, you could try some of the drives, compressors in front of it. Should work fine.
