Ok, so like the title says, I'm kind of obsessed with Landau (no homo).
I don't know what it is with this mystery man that makes most of the gear freaks out there obey him more or less. Lately I have browsed though his credits list at allmusic.com and listened through a good part of the records he's participated on, just in order to find some nice swell chorus Landau chords or some great solos to transcribe (and believe me, you WILL find a lot!) It's interesting with the records where Landau has participated because he put's his flavor on the tune, whether it's smooth jazz, 80's pop, Italian cheesy ballads, Latin cheesy ballads, with his nice chord & solo-work.
For Spotify users, I've made a nice little list with Landau kickin' ass on each tune, enjoy:

I saw him in Stockholm with Kirk Fletcher, great show.. no Dumble... but amazing tone... Not that progressive but enough to keep it interesting... and the SKILL he has to get great sounds out of a guitar...

Was he using a Dumble amp? I thought he was using Fender Devilles these days.
I feel the same as the OP - Landau is awesome. Love his album Tales From The Bulge. My favourite has to be the Burning Water albums.....especially Abbandonatto - one of my favourite albums ever!
I love Landau's tone and playing on this track:
tFAuBZLPPy4
Fantastic 80s LA studio tone.

I also love Landau's tone on this track:

That's what I'd call classic late 80s / early 90s LA studio tones.

Henderson used on at his NYC Iridium gig several months back. Sounded badass.
I'd check one out, except I figure they're having John Suhr run some mods on theirs.

I'll be seeing him next week near my home when he plays in Sebastopol, CA. He's one of the finest guitar players I've seen play live EVER. He's so dynamic, and speaks through his guitar....it's really something to behold.
I'd really like to see him with Renegade Creation....because Robben Ford is no slouch either...LOL. But Michael is one heck of a player, and I believe anyone who loves music should see him play at least once.....as he can leave you breathless with the way he handles his Strat.

Gotta say that Renegade Creation IS a band that needs to be experienced live to believe how great the sum of the parts is.
If you getta chance to see ém it's a night never forgotten.:thud:dude:phones

That Burning Water era stuff is some of the sickest stuff that Landau ever did... I just love that! Tearing his 63 Fiesta red Strat up!

Landau is one of those guys like Beck or Frisell that just have a touch to die for. I absolutely love his playing.

Not at all, just different speakers. Scott adds an EXTRA drive pedal though when he uses it and Mike and Scott only use the clean channel. They use this amp because it is light and readily available to find from cartage companys.

Well...I bragged about this on another post by GAT.....but I got to see Michael last night near my home town for a short 1 hour concert (he was playing before Charles Neville latest project). He's playing with a new Drummer who was a monster player.
After the show, he actually came up to me and talked for a bit. He remembered me from his prior show last year............and what a GREAT guy. I asked him questions about his '68 Strat, and his 90's era Custom Shop Strat (I think he said '97).........and just talked about life too! He gave me his Set-List............but I realized I had forgot my Camera...........so I couldn't get a picture this time.
In case you're wondering what he played, it was:
Who Knows
That Day
Peaceful Ride
Underwear
Worried Life
Trouble in Mind (Mazzie sang that one, and Charles Neville sat in)
I'm Buzzed
Stand Clear
I'll tell you, he gets so much tone from the Deville/Deluxe Reverb Stereo set-up...it's ridiculous. The Tone Spotters sound fantastic.....but maybe part of the Mojo is the Dumble Ultra Phonix mod on the Deluxe. Either way.....I'm just always blown away by him.

Is that a 2 X12 amp?

Loving his Organic Instrumentals at the mo in my car. Don't get too obsessed about buying the gear he uses though (unless you really want to!), cos he still sounds like him whatever he plays, whatever he plays through with whatever he's playing.

Big Landau fan since Tales from the Bulge. Love his unpredictable playing, and his solos are so emotive!
Saw Landau with The Jazz Ministry at the Baked Potato in 2008, during NAMM. What an eye-opening show that was. He was also very gracious to talk "shop" after the concert. That night he used a Suhr head through a Marshall 4x12, and his tone was the best I've ever heard in a small club!

Huge ML fan since the Dog Cheese/Joni Mitchell era.
I still regard "Tales from the Bulge" as the greatest instrumental guitar record of all time.
And those Burning Water records are like a master class in getting a Strat tone to die for - as in "Hendrix meets SRV meets Trower - on steroids!"

Michael is playing tonight in Santa Cruz @ Moe's Alley. I'm likely going down unless there are any major complications from the 10.5 inches of rain we have received in the last few days.

I knew back in the days he was mostly twin reverbs and Marshalls. Then mid to late 2000's he was using CAE OD 100s doing the wet dry wet formatting.
Later, John Suhr came out with the Badger Amp. Either way, it was Landau tone all the way.
I love his work with Karizma and the Dyno 4 an the Baked Potato, North Hollywood.
His solos remind me of a manual transmission. Soft and slow, then louder and more progressive. By the end it's like a full bore hotrod down the strip in a small town at 6AM.

+1.
Great memories there.
I was present at The Potato for the recording of the first Dyno Four CD, the legendary Karizma Live (1999) boot, and many more.

Agreed. I have been keeping my eyes on it as I have tenants, a block up on the other side of the levee. The bank requires Flood Ins. down there so I have that covered but it looks like the rain is over for awhile anyway. We had hail on the Summit today. It's been an interesting month, first hot, now this.

Michael has soul. He talked to me after the gig and even said my name, twice! If I meet him again I do want to ask him if he's responsible for all the chorused out tones during th 80's, if he's not he'll probably know the answer.

If you are a huge ML fan, you need to come over to Huge Racks Inc. Everyone there is a major ML fan and gearphile galore.
Yep...big Landau fan here.
Not a fan of his singing...but his connection with the guitar is deeper than many of us out here in TGPland can fathom.
