Dave Allen at Allen Amplification has some interesting new transformers for those of us who like to tinker with and improve our Fender amps.

I have had great results with his upgraded Princeton power transformer, and wanted to pass along the info.

AVAILABLE MID MARCH. New Upgrade output transformer for Champ™/Vibro Champ™/Bronco™ amps. 8,000 ohm primary, 4/8 ohm secondary. Paper-bobbin, paper-interleaved windings and high-performance M-6 lamination steel improves stock performance and supports the use of larger power tubes (rated up to 90ma continuous). 2-5/8” tall, 2-1/8” across end bells and 2-13/16” mounting centers. Requires drilling one hole and mounting at a slight angle. Great for 5F1 projects. Plus, there are many more 8 ohm speakers that can now be used. 1.5lbs (stock OT is one half pound). $35

AVAILABLE MID MARCH. New Upgrade output transformer for Deluxe™/Deluxe Reverb™/Princeton™. 7,000 ohm primary, 8/16 ohm secondary (4/8 ohms for 6L6/EL34 tubes). Paper bobbin, paper interleaved windings and high performance M-6 lamination steel for improved performance over stock transformer. Supports the use of 6L6 and EL34 power tubes (for amps with upgraded power transformers to support these tubes). 3” tall, 2-1/2” across end bells and 3-1/8” mounting centers. May require rotating your speaker so the transformer can sit inside one of the cutouts in the speaker frame. This is basically the Vibrolux™/Pro™/Bandmaster™ style of output transformer mounted the “tall” way. 2.4lbs (stock Deluxe™ OT - 1.5lbs, Princeton™ – 1lb.). $49

Just last month I was pestering Dave to come out with something like this for the Deluxe and thankfully he has come through!

In combination with this recent power transformer addition:

New! Upgrade power transformer for Deluxe/Deluxe Reverb amps. 325V-0-325V at 180ma, 5V at 3A and 6.3V at 5A. Supports the use of 6L6 AND EL34 power tubes (power tube sockets must be rewired for use with EL34 power tubes). Center tapped heater winding, 50V bias tap, and internal hum shield brought out to a lead for grounding. 2-1/2" by 2-13/16" mounting centers. Unit is approximately one inch taller than a stock PT and weighs approximately 7lbs. $69

... One can build a 1x12 Fender Combo using the Deluxe Reverb chassis, and choose from 6V6, 5881, 6L6 and EL34 tubes. For 6L6 or EL34 use, you can skip the tube rectifier and go with solid state diodes for a plate voltage of about 450-460v (325v AC secondary x 1.4 = 455v).

As for the new Champ OT listed at top, he also has this one:

Single-Ended Output Transformer is rated 100ma continuous. 6K/8K ohm primary/ 8 ohm secondary (or 3K/4K ohm primary/ 4 ohm secondary). Center tapped primary for use with small push-pull 2x6V6 amps. Upgrade for Champs™ or Princetons™ using 8 ohm speaker. Supports up to one KT88/6550 power tube in a single ended amp. 2-13/16" mounting centers, 1-1/4lbs. $29

With this OT and Dave's high-current Champ/Princeton power tranny, you can convert a Champ or Princeton Reverb to use a KT-88. It would produce about 15 watts. Sounds like a Supersize Chocolate Malt Milk Shake to me!

Peace,
Ken

Cool stuff. I heard an Old Flame years ago, and thought it sounded great. An Old Flame 2x10 is on the list to buy at some point.

I built that amp this winter and it is absolutely the best amp I have ever owned.

THLH, do you still have the Old Flame that you built?
