View Full Version : Liability insurance?

My band is a regional cover band. In the past we've played in the local club scene, but now we are doing many more corporate and private gigs, both local and out of state.

I just had a client request a certificate of insurance, specifically regarding liability. We have insurance that covers the trailer, PA, lights, etc., but no liability. Our carrier, USAA, does not write this type insurance, and doesn't even know where we could go to get it.

Questions:
1. Is this necessary for a regional cover band?
2. Does anyone have liability ins through their band?
3. Through what insurance company?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've never been asked for it and we don't have it.

You can get liability insurance through any insurance company that caters to small businesses. The organizer wants it so that if a piece of your gear falls, explodes, etc. and injures a punter, they have someone with deep pockets to sue (the insurer).

Music Pro has a tour liability policy. Here is a link (https://www.musicproinsurance.com/NewApplication.aspx?PolicyTypeID=4) to that page with application.

I have liability insurance through State Farm. Some wedding and corporate gigs have required it.

Arrrggghhhhhh!

The Music Pro website says they're not doing this currently, and the State Farm agent's never heard of this type insurance.

Both companies are researching for me though. We'll see

This company was just recommended to me by someone at an entertainment company:

All of the gigs that my cover band books that require liability insurance are booked through an agent that has a policy that covers all of his bands. Some gigs require it. If you have a relationship with a certain insurance company you may be able to get covered for the one gig. If you know a cool booking agent in town, you may be a able to throw him a Benjamin to put this gig on his books until you can afford a policy.

Maybe try Sterling & Sterling at sterlingrisk.com. They mention the MusicPro tour liability program, but they appear to have a dedicated underwriter for Entertainment Insurance (DeMille Halliburton), so if the MusicPro program is shut down, maybe he has an alternative market.

If it comes down to it, you can get a single event liability policy, which is a lot easier to obtain through most local insurance agents.

State Farm said no.

Talked to an independent agent that is researching.

Talked to Music Pro, and they said it might be best to just go ala carte through them. Only for gigs that require it.

Thanks again to everyone for the input!

Let us know how much it costs on a per gig basis. We were asked for it on a recent gig, but we don't have it. If we can get it on a per gig basis, I will tell any client who requests it that it's $xx extra.

I'm quite surprised public liability insurance doesn't come as standard with your gear insurance packages. It does with every insurer I investigated over here. I'm covered for something like £2m.

Is your business incorporated? Just get a blanket small business liability policy.

Will do. We'll probably go with the per gig ins - and it will show up as a line item on their invoice.

I'm getting a quote on this too. I'll let you know what I find out

This agent told me $300 per event, $860 for the year:
