Now to clarify one fact... I love metal. I am a blues fusion guy and I can but really don't play it. But I love metal. I was brought up listening to cassettes of Jason Becker, Malmsteen black sabbath etc.

But right now as we all know, music for music is not the real priority of musicians anymore... It's more gimmicky and crappy now...

Which brings me to this kid...

You have yourself Nik Kai... 10 year old kid who "shreds" *Direct quote from his critics* "better than 90% of all guitarists out there" -_-"..

At first I was like "ok since metal hammer has nominated him in a category for an award and has played on the same stage as some top guys this kid must be some epic guitarist...." and then I heard him -.-"...

No seriously guys I don't care whether a person is 12 or 78 years old... I think it is the music that matters.

And seriously there are kids like this guy

Who are actually doing a good job playing metal young... And he sounds pretty cool... There is sungha Jung who is ripping it with Andy McKee and Tommy Emmanuel and he sounds BRILLIANT !!

How does this kid... Who is terrible -_-".. (am sorry but I don't feel the need for euphemism it's just that bad...) gets an endorsement, record deal, nomination for metal hammer and gigs ??? Just because he is 10 ??

I don't know what to think of the judges that nominated him... How did they not... Use their ears ?? I do not think of myself as a musician... I come home from work and wank on my guitar just for the hell of it... So I really can't be jealous if that is what you are thinking -_-"... But again my question comes to this... Have fans of metal music really become so deaf that any form of noise which is loud and distorted becomes *metal music* ???

Also I am sorry for the rant :/....

Metal is, now more than ever before, about image. A little kid, where the guitar is bigger than he or she is, is always going to sell, regardless of whether they can play or not.

Good metal and popular metal don't seem to go very much hand-in-hand these days.

Of course you have...
HE'S NINE!!!!!!
give the kid a break people. Jesus.

He's doing better on guitar than what I was when I was his age.

Edit: really though,.. should he have turned down an endorsement and say something like, "No, Im sorry, I don't feel Im good enough yet to have an endorsement for playing my guitar, come back when Im 18. Hopefully by then i will be lost in a sea of other guitar players and am completely indistinguishable from all the others."

give the kid a break.

The market for this kid is probably 8 to 15, those are the people that care about that crap. Did you have good taste back then? I know I didn't.

Metal is such a broad genre these days that a lot of metal heads probably don't have the much in common in terms of musical taste except for the fact that they like wearing black.

I guess it all depends on what you classify as metal. I guess it's metal in some form. I hear stuff like this and it's just another form of pop music with slightly different packaging. And like with any genre if you want the good stuff you will not find it in the mainstream. You want good metal start looking at the underground stuff. Record people are just looking for ways to make a Justin Bieber for the "metal" folks. But really they are just looking for ways to make a buck. You want good music that's really pushing bounds then go to the underground.

It's just a gimmick - that little kid would get swallowed hole by even CC Deville, for chrissakes... His hand muscles haven't even fully developed yet...

I'd be more impressed if the kid would play some Chuck Berry "double-stops" - rather than just ripping thru "modal" scales... :)

I don't know if metal heads are deaf/ignorant/plain dumb, but I know you're at least one of the three dear OP.

^ This makes it out like the OP was hating on the kid. I didn't get that at all. The kid is who he is and good for him. I thought the OP was addressed at nearly everyone but the kid.

I have no problem with his playing. I mean, he's good enough for me to recognize what song he's wrecking. The hat, vest, and get up is a bit much, but whatever.
