View Full Version : Adjusting to a Different Guitar

For several years, my Am Dlx Strat was basically the only electric guitar I played. Then, a few months ago, I picked up a nice R8. The Lester sounds fantastic, but I'm having trouble adjusting to the lesser string tension (shorter scale, flatter neck, etc.), and I still find myself over-bending a lot. I definitely like the tension on my Strat better--the LP just doesn't fight my fingers enough.

Would switching to a larger string gauge make the Lester's string tension more like a Strat? Would going from 10s to 11s require a set-up? Any other suggestions for dealing with the difference?

Thanks!

Play the new guitar a lot! But I'm sure you're already doing that. :)

I think you should embrace the differences between the guitars instead of trying to make your LP feel like your Strat.

They are going to play a bit different regardless of string guage, that's the nature of shorter vs. longer scale axes. If it keeps driving you nuts, try the 11s, with incumbent intonation and possible truss rod adjustments. It's no biggie to go back again, but one way or another they'll always feel different, IMHO. I went through this over the last year or so after I got my first 24 3/4 scale guitar. In the end, I've just gotten used to 10s on everything.

Yes if you do 10's on a Strat then you will want 11's on a Les Paul IMO. :dude

Slap them 11's on there and you tell us if it needs a setup. In most cases it won't but ya never know :dunno

You know how to adjust and setup your guitar just in case right :nuts

If you don't, Let me tell you a secret and don't tell anyone okay :dude

There is this thing called the Internet and you can learn how to do anything on it. They even have these things called "videos" that will show you how to do it.

I spent 12 seconds on You Tube and I found this. :dude
