Aw man, I really didn't need to see this right now! :D I've really gotten into strats recently and have been wondering how I'd get on with a Tyler, they sound like they're great guitars. I've been eyeing up this one (http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/electrics/tyler/sehd_04245/sehd_04245.html) recently (please someone, intervene and save my bank account!) but empty71's just looks fantastic. I gotta try me out a Tyler....

Not only does Tyler make a GREAT neck carve, but compared to the other botique strats, it has MOJO -- the only guitar that comes close (in my experience) to having MOJO is a Tom Anderson.

Probably a classic though. For the single coil config.
or a combo of the two.

you can go to the Tyler website....as far I can tell, the HD has the detmer midboost preamp whereas the on-HD *may* not. The non-HD could be either totally passive or have the deluxe lead circuit treatment which also the midboost.

Not exactly...Hd´s are alder made, with boost and a 5 way selector. Pickups are Dimarzio VV, Duncan stack or Suhr v60 (singles) and Dimarzion or Duncan (hums).
SE´s have tyler pickus (made by Anderson i think, singles have dummy coils inside), 5 way selector, and a 3 pos. switch for every pickup. Bodies can be alder or ash.
Both have the booster.
Here are my girls. Best guitars i´ve played so far...

no locking tuner/vintage bridge system is gonna be as stable as a locking floyd. the tyler i have is close, but it still requires fine-tuning between songs.

i love that one! what are those switches and doodads? and what kind of pickups are in it?
pickups are a duncan JB trembucker TB4 in the bridge position and two duncan classic stacks.
as for the controls...volume knob is your standard-sized volume knob. that's the chrome knob. the small black knob is the midboost. the 5-way switch is self-explanatory.
there are three small mini-switches next to one another. each one controls one of the pickups, and each one has three positions. what it basically allows you to do is select each pickup to be wired as series, split, or parallel. bear in mind that the two single-coils are duncan classic stacks, so you can wire the two coils on each pickup very differently. it makes a huge difference to have the pickups wired differently--that was one that i loved about my friend ken's tyler.
there is a small black pushbutton, and that is the midboost preset button. it allows you to preset the amount of boost you want dialed in and then just kick it in when you want it--great for solos, for example.
the last mini-switch is the one that is located by itself on top of the 5-way switch, and that is what tyler calls the lead/rhythm circuit. it's kind of like anderson's blower switch, which basically is a two-way switch. set one way, and whatever you have selected on the 5-way switch and the three mini-toggles is what you get. flick it the other way, and it's the bridge humbucker wired in series--again, great for going to soloing tones when you have the 5-way set for, say, a clean funk tone with the neck and middle pickups split.

Mine is pictured on the Tyler website. Look under "Tyler Guitars" "New Stuff". Mine is the Lemon Yellow Schmear Classic pictured. Two suhr v60 lps, Mike Landau bridge pickup that splits unbelievably well, quartersawn maple neck (I am unsure if all Tyler necks are Quartersawn or not). Got it from Indoor Storm based off the mp3s I heard, and the guitar didn't disappoint. Deep tone, resonates amazingly well, plays really well. I have a 59 strat, and I play my Tyler more.

Just to add something to John Ou`s info...on the Studio Elites with the Tyler pickups (Anderson made), the system is different. Under the pickguard there are two dummy coils, one for each single coil, and the switching system for those two pickups works series (with the dummy)(upper pos)-Incative dummy (medium pos)- parallel with the dummy (lower one).

john ouI ride my tone controls constantly(thanks, Splatt). There are a LOT of colours in there. Bridge PU rolled off with middle PU full on? Neck full on with bridge PU rolled off? Bridge solo with various degrees of tone roll off? Let's not even get into different caps. I wouldn't wanna give those up.
My Tyler should be in my hands in the next couple three weeks. I'm psyched.

If yours is like mine you'll have to do some rewiring, both tone knobs work on the singles. I'm going to have to rewire mine, I like backing of on the bridge tone when I'm trying to "feel it" on the belly rubbers :AOK

Hi Brian, many thanks. Both are incredible tone machines. in 2004, I tired hard to get a classic custom without luck. So ordered the custom shop job - red schmear. Then, to my delight, I managed to trade a PRS for the purple Tyler. And what a guitar that is! Great neck, tones, really quite inspiring. I love Tyler guitars

Yes it is! A guy from here bought it and then posted it for sale and I bought it from him. I didn't bond with other Tylers I played, this one kills! It has a smaller neck shape than the normal 59 (which is too big for me). I'm really loving this thing.

I'm crazy about the Lollar pickups for Stratocaster Single Coils. You would probably want the Black Face pickups. I like Van Zandts though too. I just tried the new Duncan Antiquity II "Surf" pickups and if you want ultra spanky Stratocaster tones they do it really well.
I didn't know you got one with Mamywo Body. Now you definetely have to bring it by cause' I haven't heard a Tyler yet made from Mamyo! I'll treat ya to a slice of Knock Out Pizza if ya do! :BEER

I want a Classic but with the electronics like an SE i.e.Five way selector switch with lead/rhythm circuit, volume with mid boost preamp,Midboost preamp bypass button. I wanted a birdseye neck but the shop says they are less stable than the standard neck. Anyone own a birdseye or play one? Is it worth the few hundred dollars?

I've got a birdseye neck on my Grosh - large soft V with no stability issues and looks very nice. I bought the guitar new two years ago and it's seen it's share of gig duty, temp extremes, etc. If that's what you want I say go for it.
BTW - the "standard" Tyler neck is one of my two favorite necks I've ever played, and I care not how it looks. Love my Classic!!! :AOK

Yep, no more Tylerbasters. It was replaced by the Mongoose Retro which has a standard Telecaster Bridge Pickup and your choice of Mini Humbucker, Regular Humbucker, P90 or Standard Telecaster Pickup in the neck. There's even one or two on the Tyler Website that have Telecaster Bridge and Stratocaster PU's in the neck and middle.

Hi Steve,

Yes indeed, I got it earlier this month and it's one hell of a guitar. Magne and Deb are as cool as they come, great service!

Yes, I thought i recognized that one:)! I have had some dealings with Godlyd and its always been a pleasent experience. I just wish Norway could join the EU so we wouldnt have to pay sales tax and customs fees when buying from them.

Mastervolume, can you give me some specs on your Tylerbastar? I've been looking at a 2004 model but not too sure about the nut width. Might be too small for my hands. Anyways, give me the lowdown, year built, does that say 2007 on headstock? Do they still make Tylerbastars or are they only special orders? Neck specs: nut width, radius, frets, etc. Did you get this through Tone Merchants or direct from Tyler?
Thanks!

They don't make the Tylerbastars anymore, just the Mongoose Retro. The specs are whatever you order, just like the Studio Elite. A 2004 doesn't narrow things down at all... it could be almost anything.

How custom? If you want a twin neck with the body the shape of a donkey, made from solid graphite with a double dragon paua inlay I think the answer is probably 'no' (I dunno - maybe he has a price for such a guitar), but within his published spec parameters you can get one built to order that is to your measurements, finish, wood, hollowness, electronics, hardware etc.

The Mongoose Retro is basically going to be set-up like a Tele.
I saw Susan Tedeshi's favorite tele and liked that color scheme. Surf green with a tortoise shell pick guard. All maple, 59 shaped neck.
In terms of pickups, electronics, frets, bridge, hardward, etc.... it's all up to Jim. I just want that Nashville spanking tone! I've been digging Paisley, Bukovac, Corenflos and Greg V's tones... I want Jim to create the Tele part of that formula.

the production run has a chrome covered tyler shark in the bridge and Tyler singles.
I had Jim throw one of new pickups in mine called a Magnatron 14K, combination of slug mags and bar mags, does a great job of bridging the gap between humbucker and single, it's bright and sparkly with a round bottom end and sounds awesome in split mode.
What's that bridge pickup?
