View Full Version : Tweed to Blackface question

I have a 1x12" 30 watt/6L6 Tweed 'Proluxe' w/ a Scumback M75. It's a basically a 5E3 chassis but w/ larger transformers to handle the 6L6 power tubes. I would like to make a speaker change that would scoop the mids a little and move me toward more of a 'quasi' Blackface tone with this amp. The amp's a custom build and has a treble and bass control instead of just a single tone control so it's a little more flexible that your average 5E3. Maybe some of you TGP'rs 'in the know' could recommend a speaker(s) that might help me achieve this desired eq shift? I realize I can't turn a tweed into a blackface with just a speaker change, but any movement in that direction would be helpful. BTW, I play Strats and Teles.

Much Thanks to everyone for chiming in on this!

Perry

The Scumback M75 is a British voiced speaker, right? Most American speakers will have less midrange providing a more balanced sound. I would look at the Emi Patriot series, some great speakers at nice prices, as well as Weber.

Eminence Swamp Thang is my suggestion. Big low end, but not a dark speaker at all to my ears; still has nice highs and a bit subdued in the mids. Just my opinion.

I was thinking this and owned two in the past year. Very present bottom, but handles it well. However, I tend to prefer less low end personally. It was a great speaker for the Blues Junior, but was too bassy for my Bassman.

Yes, and a meaty one at that. I don't agree on American speakers having less mids necessarily, just that the mid peak is usually higher in frequency. Us guitarists would call that treble, but often it's just high mids. :)

Had I been the OP and considering the amp has 6V6s my main concern would have been the lows and finding a speaker sufficient in this region. Having heard a clip on Youtube with some 5E3 type amp I've been very impressed by the Jensen Blackbird speaker.

I guess that is a good distinction. Some American speakers have more presence, but this sometimes goes beyond the 6k range.

I wouldn't bother with the speaker. While it does have a huge effect on tone shaping...a Deluxe Reverb through a Greenback still sounds like a DR, not a tweed Deluxe. It isn't going to be any more successful using a speaker to go the other way.

I would go in and increase the power filtering, revoice the preamp, maybe add some negative feedback, etc. You can definitely revoice it into a brownface Deluxe, which is halfway to blackface.

This tweed Deluxe has already been voiced toward a blackface because of it's bass/treble tone stack. I prefer Jensen type speakers and like the Jensen Neo 12-100 and Tornado speakers because of their light weight. I also like the Eminence Lil' Texas Neo speaker. The Jensen reissue C12N is good after it has been broken in so it's not as bright sounding.

Yep. Ceramic Jensen or Weber copy. C12N probably.

I want to try one of these, probably gonna have to build a Vibrolux though !

I think I'd be looking strongly towards the tone stack. You could maybe do a simple BF/SF style bass and treble and play with the midrange resistor value (6.8K typical). Depending on how your existing tone stack is arranged this may or may not be a viable option and may kill more signal than you want. If it can be done then have a .022, .033, and .047 around for the midrange cap and tune to your liking.

And as previously mentioned adding feedback will help keep the amp more under control- less midrangey.

Is there such a thing as a 30 watt 5e3 with 6L6's? Wouldn't the transformers and other components have to be altered from 5e3 spec to accomplish that? Is it a class A amp or is it more like a tweed super/pro/bandmaster?

OP said it's a 6L6 amp.

I built one of my Mission Tweedies with a 4/8-ohm Super output transformer and 10-watt cathode resistor. It's the same preamp so sounds similar whether using 6V6s or 6L6s...just have to select the correct output jack for each. 6L6s give 30 watts I think.

That doesn't mean it's been voiced for Blackface, scooped-mids, signature "Fender Tone."

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for contibuting to my thread!

I'm thinking that a speaker change might be the most cost effective way to nudge my amp a little more toward the BF camp. I don't want to get into any mods on the circuit board because the guy who built it moved out of state and there isn't anyone in my area that I would trust to do the work. Plus, if I'm gonna start forkin' out too much money, I might as well just apply those funds toward a nice BF style amp.
The WGS speakers intrigue me...and the price is certainly right! I'll seach the boards and see what people have said about the WGS G12C and how it stacks up against the Jensens, Webers etc...

Gawd, I LOVE TGP!! :aok
