Assuming you have an 8 song debut album, what do you play at gigs after it comes out? Say you have two hours to play. Do you play the whole album and maybe a few more? A few songs from the first album, some newer ones and maybe some that you don't intend to have on an album? I don't get it. Nobody wants to hear the album in its entirety but you don't want to play everything on a new album that's in the works before it is released. What do you do?

Typically artists aren't headlining on their first album, they're opening for someone else, so they have (at most) an hour to fill, so you play the album (which for the first album should be the best songs you've written in the last five years) and a new tune or two, or a cover.
If you are in the position of having to fill two sets with one album, I'd suggest filling things out with covers in the same vein as your original material and get writing.

Why not play the whole album especially if its just 8 songs? and the best of the new songs you are working on...nothing wrong with giving fans a preview of your new stuff.

I was thinking covers as well. It's odd though because the Allman Brothers headlined the Atlanta Pop festival in 1970 (600,000 people!) before they released they're second album. They played a lot of songs from it and a lot of songs that were never on a studio album.

You and the band might hold it that you don't play stuff not released yet... but that's exactly how some bands ( like The Grateful Dead ) did it.. They would work out new tunes... traditional tunes etc live.. They made money playing live.. or LOVED playing live and giving shows...
If you like jammin' book more then 2 hour shows and have fun... Just like you don't need play the same SHOW ever time... shuffle 'em up and play some covers ( you've made your own ) to support what you guys love.. and the audience might just love it.. Depends what kind of band you guys want to be I guess...
Having at least 40 50 tunes in the pocket is good for a band... or more... You can extend some of your own tunes... NOT play them exactly like the album release... Jam... Don't play the same way all the time.. or rather.. let yourselves have some fun jammin' freedom... and play different shows each night.
Maybe you'll consider it after another album or so in your Vaults... But booking two nights.. Making your own shows outdoors.. and having fans camping out and a general cool party / celebration atmosphere is brilliant.. It can and is being done...
But don't sweat what you guys will play.. and certainly play stuff you haven't released or recorded... it's already under copyright, from it's inception... Invite friends / Musicians to join a tour etc...
It's fun... Yes there's the drudgery ( often ) of touring etc.. but hey man it's what we make it.,. an a DIY ( do it yourself ) format and having fun is up to us and our crew.....
