Ever have one of those days when everything you say comes out totally bass-ackward and you're a shmuck whenever your lips move? That was me backing up Mr. McGann about ten years ago. I turned what should have been a beautiful day into a personal low-point.

RIP, sir, and here's hoping you don't get stuck hanging around somebody having one of those days wherever you're at now.

In addition to being a masterful mandolin player and transcription writer, John was also a gifted guitar player, pedal steel player and close friends with the late, great master luthier John Zeidler. John M. owned many Zeidler instruments (his primary mandolin is a Zeidler)...and he was the original owner this guitar, that is now my number 1:

As great a musician as John was, he was a devoted father and husband.

My condolences to all his friends, students, and especially his family.

So sad... Was fortunate to know John when I was REALLY little, my first really good guitar teacher. I remember taking lessons w. him and he pretty much introduced me to proper technique and showed me tons of rock guitar in his old apartment. A genius and a super kind man. Speechless here but wanted to at least write something as he was a HUGE positive person in my early musical life...and I will always cherish the time and deep well of inspiration that he gave me.

John was to appear Kennedy Center Millenium Stage this evening. I'm watching the live broadcast and they just dedicated the song Cry, Cry, Cry to John. And more dedications are coming.
