View Full Version : swapping rectifier tubes
Can the GZ34 rectifier tube be changed to a 5Y3 in a deluxe reverb reissue with out doing anything other than rebiasing? Would a GZ32 or 5V4g be a better choice.
Yes, just rebias. You CANNOT use a 5Y3 with 6L6's because of the extra voltage. This is straight from David Allen at Allen Amps. I'm running my Old Flame (much like a Deluxe Reverb) with 6V6's and a 5U4 right now. Because the 6V6's have a lower voltage, just about any rectifier tube will work with a minor rebias.

I just purchased a Tweed Proluxe from Steven Gupta and it has 6L6's and a 5Y3GT rectifier in it. Can you put a GZ34 in it to undo some of the SAG.

Lot's of '50s tube PA amps used 5Y3s with 6L6s. The reason this may not work would be CURRENT, not voltage. In any case, it will work for a while....likely a long while.
