Just got a new SG Standard - sorry, no pics yet. I don't believe this is a design flaw at all, and maybe they have been designed like this for a while (not sure), but due to the neck angle the top of the Pups don't sit "parallel" with the strings. Tone, sustain, attack is everything i expected from an SG - it sounds great! The issue is only esthetic.

The Standards have the bat-wing pick guard and I was curious if anyone ever put pickup rings on their Standard to bring the Pups more "in-line" with the strings. I'm thinking I should be able to purchase a couple of Gibson pup rings at my local store and install them fairly easily.

The rings on my LP Standard are "angled" and look like they would work perfectly for this.

Anyone ever done this? Any reason not to?

If you like the tone now, I would hesitate to make any change to it simply for looks. Moreover, I think a batwing SG with pickup rings just looks "wrong." The bottom line is that the vintage guitars didn't have the same neck angle that Gibson uses today. The geometry of the modern guitar might have made it preferable to ditch the batwing style and go back to a small guard with rings, but that would cost more as better quality wood would be required (you can hide a lot under that big pickguard). That said, with the batwing style, rings would look weird (at least to me).
