So I odered a warmoth strat neck and decided to go with Hipshot grip-lock tuners. Problem was I couldn't find any reliable info on what the size of the tuner hole should be. I emailed hipshot and this is what they said:

Thank you for your question about our Guitar Tuners.
Both our non-locking and Griplock require a 10mm hole for installation. You can pick either the Schaller or Sperzil hole pattern as both will work with our tuners. The Schaller hole pattern would be the best fit though.
Thanks!

So we have a definitve answer except for the part where neither the schaller or sperzel holes are 10mm:huh. They are both 25/64 from the back. Schaller uses a smaller hole of 11/32 for the face of the headstock.

Anyway who's quibbling. Hipshot says it'll work and I'll take them at their word.

FWIW I ordered them from here: http://www.tkinstruments.com/id157.htm

$60 for chrome griplocks with staggered post
$12 for the schaller style buttons (neat marketing ploy that is. Sell your product with fugly keys BUT offer more appealing ones for an upcharge!)
$9 shipping

None of the other online dealers carried (or even mentioned) the staggered posts. It would have been $100 for the same set ordered directly from hipshot

The cool thing about these tuners besides the 18:1 ratio, open gear look and the fact they are OEM on Suhr, Tyler and Soloway gtrs is the light weight. Hipshot lists the weight as 32 grams/tuner. By comparison my old schaller lockers are 52 grams each.

I found this post when searching for an answer to the same question. Did you go with the Schaller holes and did the Grip-Lock tuners fit?

so you did the same thing as suhr and swapped out the buttons?

man, hipshot needs to fix this! they have a hip product here and they've handicapped it with those hideous buttons.

I assume he was talking about the peg spacing pattern and not the hole width

I'm using the standard ones on my new project. Smoothest tuner I've ever used.
FWIW, I drilled the holes with a 3/8" bit and opened em up with a round rasp.

i like how you arranged the keys in this shot so we can't see just how ugly they are ;)

(headstock looks sweet, though)

I bought the tuners on Ebay from sporthitech. They will switch out the tuner buttons for no extra charge. I got mine with the mini schaller buttons.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but I was asking about the width for the tuner holes.

I did just get a reply from Hipshot that was pretty much the same as the one in the original post. It sounds like the Schaller holes are the way to go.

It was to fr8_trane who seemed confused by the response from Hipshot.

Any reason you guys decided to go with Hipshot over Sperzel?

My main reason for choosing the Hipshots was the great reviews I have read from other users. High gear ratio, smooth operation, and light weight. I have Sperzels on my Suhr and while they work very well, I seem to occasionally have a hard time getting the strings fed into the posts.
