A former college professor of mine has a son with 2 year old son that was diagnosed with Leukemia. I am very close to this professor and his wife (who was my college advisor). I want to help but I don't know where to start. I know that there are a lot of people on TGP that have dealt with difficulties or helped those that have.

They are having a fundraiser dinner soon, so they have that going for them. I wonder if it would be appropriate to offer my time to help them. I don't know what their needs are in that department and I wouldn't want to encroach on them in this difficult time. I have considered consulting with my pastor at my church and trying to raise funds that way. That church has a lot of well-to-do members that are very giving. I would love to give them a ton of money to help, but I am a man of limited means. I just want to help.

Do any of you have any ideas?

A facebook page with a paypal link seems to work. I dont know how to go about it myself either, but Ive given money to people like that.

I hadn't thought about that. In fact, I am betting that we can get a lot out to the student population via facebook, and that they would be willing to help.

Contact local Police organizations as well as local motorcycle clubs. In my experience both groups are always willing to participate in such events and all too sadly, they usually have experience in these matters. Good luck with your efforts and thoughts and prayers are headed to that child and their family. If you end up getting something together please let us all know how we may donate.

I appreciate that. These are really good people. I have been a selfish person my whole life, and it is time for me to give back. They deserve better than this. I can't imagine the hell of having a child with a serious illness. I have a 1 year old son, and a daughter on the way, and they are my world.

contact local tv station...these are community stories which get people's attention, they can do a small piece on the family and be sure and set up a bank account at local bank for donations...

local club/fire department can do a weekend cookout...big cookers and big donations...we had a local girl hit by a car here and raised close to $25,000 @ $5.00 per plate + whatever extra people wanted to throw in the bucket...fire department is really good at this stuff...

Prayers for the family and 2 year old...

I am sure the family appreciates the prayers. I will try these things and get back to you guys with what I am doing. I won't push for people here to donate, but if anyone insists, I will open a PayPal up for the family.
