These guys clicked with me on SNL. They seem to be doing well with average to crappy gear and riffs I have heard somewhere before. Good on them.

yeah they arent bedroom wankers with boutique gear.
all they need is a jtm 45, a few silverface fenders amps and a tweed amp.
that kind of crappy gear has worked for tons of musicians.

Dan actually plays some good gear (IMO). JTM45, Victoria Double Deluxe, and a silverface 70s Fender. Add a green Russian Muff and a Fulltone TTE and there ya go. The newest album is really killer.

Great episode, wish the Keys had more screentime and discussed food/bbq more. I'm craving some 'cue real bad today after that show haha...

So Victoria amps and Fulltone TTE's aren't boutique? Love the guy's setup but let's not act like he's exactly roughing it.

They are headlining Lollapalooza over bands such as Black Sabbath and Jack White. Not to mention Gary Clarke Jr who is buried on the 5th line of the playbill. Crazy.

Not really that crazy. And all those were announced as Headliners (other than Gary Clarke, who shouldn't be).
Some thoughts:
Black Sabbath = real possibility they won't make it
Jack White = not the White Stripes, Racouteers, etc....sounds like a solo gig
Gary Clarke Jr = he is pretty much a small unknown. He album while really cool, is no more than an EP really. I see no reason he would be a major act at this point.
They Black Keys are multi-grammy award winners. The current album peaked at #2 on the Billboard charts. Their MSG concert sold out in 15 minutes.....they are worthy of headline status right now.

Well said. The new Jack White album is pretty cool.

Jack White isn't playing solo. He has two bands, one all female, the other all male, and he had been playing songs from each of his bands. Going to be a killer show.

Yep, the Black Keys are awesome, but you're mistaken if you think they don't care about gear. I read somewhere that Auerbach has over 100 fuzz pedals or something. Regardless of what you may have seen him using on SNL, he's very much a gear-guy, probably more so than 90% of other guitarists in major acts these days.

The fact that you didn't name the bands to me suggests solo act...I didn't mean it in the sense that it would be a one man show.

+1
I met him after a show last year and talked gear for about 15 minutes. Way more knowledgable than I expected and also an extremely nice guy. Very gracious and fan friendly. He has a thing for odd vintage guitars and fuzz pedals.

Bourdain must be taking his show into the next phase... tying into music ....since he has been almost everywhere in the world.

It's Jack with his new band promoting the new album, Blunderbuss. Probably the same band that was on SNL with him.

Yes, the album written, recorded and produced solely by Jack White from what I've read.
