I have a epi that has a mini in the neck. It's very hot, much too hot for any rhythm playing at all unless you're playing thru a totally clean amp like a fender i suppose. It reads 16k ! even split it's too hot to clean up with the guitar volume. (sure like to know what they were tinking with this choice of neck pup!)
So i want to replace it, but i really don't want to spend much. So i'm looking for a mini thats as cheap as any common seymour or dimarzio (yes, i know they both make em) and when turning the guitar down to clean up plugging into a dirty amp i want it to get a almost SC tone like a fender does on the neck pup. As close as possible to bell tone. But when cranked and hitting a clean boost i want the same full round santana sort of lead tone up in the 10th fret and up area. So i probably need something in the 8k neighborhood.
I suppose i could probably grab any Seymour or dimarzio and be happy enough, but It's always good to ask in case theres a model out there that the general consensus says is one of the best buys out there.

have you thought of a p90, I am guessing you are replacing a Nighthawk.
I remember reading some posts I had one never could bond with it.
Just thought what would it sound like more like a Blueshawk that my dad actually liked.

I like the Grosh mini. They are $150.00 each and worth every penny.

Did you try lowering it?

Firebird pup.
The antiquity or the lollar are both good bets

My Seymour Duncan Logo Mini hum is great and steer clear of GFS mini's as there is no tone to be had with those.
If you can find a deal on a used Lollar mini-hum, they have that tone it sounds like what you're looking for--like a really fat Tele! GREAT sounding p'ups. Not cheap new, but worth it.

Tom Anderson M1+ has the sound of a super fat single coil and does great cleans when rolled back.

Grosh is making mini buckers now.

Flush with the guard it's still about the hottest pup you'll ever hear, and muddier still when lowered.

I was wondering about those, tho in this guitar i'm wacky about looks and that would look horrible in this guitar. I love andersons HB's tho so i'd probably like it.

I haven't tried a ton of em. When I got an SM3 Duncan, I stopped looking. Beautiful clean sounds and goes right into Honky Tonk Women with some dirt.
They come stock with that goofy SD logo stamped on it, but I'm told you can get one with a plain cover through the custom shop for no extra charge.

I guess the SD is the only "normal" priced option besides the dimarzio. Anyone else?

David Shepherd Custom Wound Mini Humbuckers for the win! Best boutique mini's I have ever heard. The neck mini is smooth rhythm city! Sounds like exactly what you want.

I think BG does a mini now. Bryan's prices are about the same as Duncan's.

Maybe not listed on his site, but I know he's done some.

I've usually found a mini to be brighter than regular humbuckers.. it's too bad that yours is muddy .. I guess that it's not the pots..?
I've got GFS Fat Overwound ( 8.8K neck / 12K bridge ) in a chambered Les Paul and I like them a lot. But , as with most pickups, I've seen reviews from people that don't like them ( but they make different models of Mini's, so it maybe it wasn't the same one ) .
I've got lots of guitars with a lot of different pickups and I like them for being a bit brighter than some humbuckers. They do what I expected mini's to do..
