Hey everyone. my TGP name of pedalcr8z is not guitar pedals, rather it is my bicycle fetish! I work for Bicycle Garage Indy (BGI) which has consistently been a top 50 or 100 dealer for 25 years. Today we had a a Italian lust fest! We are bringing in the Colnago brand and the rep stopped by with a handful of samples that I thought some TGP cycle junkies would appreciate.

pedalcr8z - nice bikes! How do you like the carbon fiber belt drivetrain on the Trek Single Speed? Is it nice and smooth, and quiet? Does the carbon fiber belt have good torque to it?

That said, I still ride my old Trek 400T, which has thousand's of miles on it. I had it overhauled last year, and the drivetrain is super smooth and quiet. I use Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals on it. But, they re-designed the cleat, and there's too much float now. Any suggestions for a better clipless pedal?

This is what I ride most of the time these days. It's a Surly 1x1 tweaked out a bit and powder-coated.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/DSC_6755a1.jpg

This is an older Italian-bade steel Bianchi, Campy Chorus and I treated myself to a set of wheels built up using the original hubs though I went with one of your... ahem... competitors... Scott Irons at ICS. Don't ride this one nearly as much as I should, but a buddy and I hit Eagle Creek on occasion and if he's riding road, I bring this.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/DSC_6789a1.jpg

Don't laugh at the matte green one. The post was temporary. It's a KHS Team something I've had since 1997, complete with cheesy crackle finish. I finally refinished it a couple years ago, put on a full set of XT from another bike that had seen minimal use and put some new wheels on it (pictured the originals). I'd hate to guess how many miles I've put on it 15,000? Probably more.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/P1010550a1.jpg

Got this one a couple years ago to flip, but I haven't been able to part with it. If it was a couple years older, I'd keep it for sure (if we shared the same birth year). Other than under the cable clips, it's in pretty great condition. I restored it a bit but these old Schwinns don't take much work. Three buddies and I ride around the track area the night before each race. Three of them ride Stingrays and Crates, I ride this.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/IMG_1096a1.jpg

I bought this to flip late last year, but I think I'll ditch the stand and replace the saddle and keep it as a bike to take on vacations. It has the 8 speed internal and... I've grown to really like it. Wish it had a separate V brake on the rear though.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/P1010621a11.jpg

Bought this one to flip but the wheels were beyond help so I put on a spare set and have been enjoying it a bit lately. Rides absolutely GREAT.

Ain't that the truth. I'm fascinated by all the new tech in race bikes, but they depreciate far too fast for me to want to own a really nice one. As for guitars, I've been recycling the same $3000 for the past 7 years.

One thing I've learned in the business is that the cost ratio of a bicycle is meaningless as it pertains to the pure fun factor. I have ridden $700.00 bicycles that make me every bit as happy as riding one that's 10k. Kinda like Tweed amps come to think about it ie., a $1000.00 Champ's fun factor is right there with a 9K Two Rock, just a different flavor so to speak. A $20.00 garage sale lugged steel frame bicycle provides a fun snapshot of history that one can not experience with a 10k plastic bike! As for your Fred First comment I highly doubt you'll see that type behavior in this thread. Real cyclists enthusiasts enjoy all bikes, they all have something to bring to the table.

Wrong sir! I discovered today that they produce the MasterLight in frame sizes up to 65cm. It's not cheap at $3295.00 for the frame and fork but it's also a handmade lugged and chromed steel frame with a fit and finish that's exemplary. I learned today that in addition to it being lugged it also has a pin in each lug, supposed to ride incredibly smooth.

I just recently upgraded from a Marin, San Rafael to this Trek 8.5 Dual Sport:http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/AnalogDelayGear/Trek85DS.jpgThis thing is incredible. I've never had disc brakes before this and I'll never go back now. The original tires were quite a bit nobbier so I swapped them out for these Continental Country Plus tires. Very slick with just a tiny bit of tread.

I need a bike that can do long distances but also has front suspension. It adds a lot of weight but I really need it for where I ride. But the beauty of this bike is the remote lockout switch:

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/AnalogDelayGear/RemoteLockoutSwitch.jpg

I can lock or unlock the suspension with the flick of a switch. It's a really nice ride. The weather is warming up and I'm getting pretty excited.

Hey pedalcr8z! You had advised me on a bike purchase in another thread where I mentioned I wanted to bike El Camino de Santiago. After a lot of research I realized a touring bike wouldn't do. Many of the sites I want to see are off of the foot path of the trail. I need some type of "off road" bike. I also needed a bike that could handle quite a few pavement miles as well, plus something that could handle 40lbs of grear, +/-. Also, I wanted a commuter bike to ride the weekdays, and an off road bike on the weekend.

This is the bike I chose.

Nice well rounded herd there tele_phil.

Thanks. I only need one more to fully round it out - a Yeti full suspension, carbon fiber rig. Either the AS-R C or the ASR5-C. It will be a couple years down the road though.

My wife has been taking my cross bike (set up with rack and fenders for commuting) and she wants one of her own. Seeing how I want her to get into touring with me that will be the next purchase. After that I'll get her one of the Yeti full suspension rigs. She has an awesome, custom built, titanium hard-tail mountain bike that she loves. A full suspension would be very nice for some of the really long rides that we like to do.

I love the Oltre, just not the price. If I just rode solo, I wouldn't be too worried. I've seen enough bike frames snapped in races that I can't justify the $. :eeks At the same time, it would be a shame not to be using something like the Oltre at its' maximum potential.

There are some retired folks in my small town who appear to get tons of exercise riding around the quieter streets and slow moving business areas. Same goes for a cottaging areas we frequent. That will be me in a few years.

I'm impressed with what some of you have here. I'm pretty much restricted to one Schwinn with lots of suspension for my aching bones. In my youth I had a decent Sekine road bike and a variety of other bikes, but the one my heart lingers on is a CCM with 28" wheels that I used as a newspaper bike. That thing would carry a load, really as much as I could handle with carriers front and rear.

Nothing wrong with a Schwinn. It's getting out on the bike that this the most important thing. I'm fortunate to live in a town where I can ride everywhere and to have a wife who doesn't mind me having a quiver of bikes that I use all the time. It's also good that she shares my passion for getting out on the bikes.

Nice bike - what is the deal with a belt drive? I have never ridden one. Advantages/disadvantages. How durable is it?

A few weeks ago there was the "Bike Expo" at State Fair Park... the huge convention hall filled with bikes.

I'd seen the Trek Madones and stuff- I haven't had a whole lot of interest in them, but thought they're pretty cool. This year I actually lifted one off the ground... wow. I think my water bottle cages are heavier than those bikes.

I started riding again around 3 years ago. Not sure if I was looking for a hobby or if I was looking for "exercise" or something to replace smoking- as I knew I was going to try to quit that summer... I've found I love biking. It's not a "go fast" thing, it's just going out and enjoying myself, the view, the thoughts... I also love the "gear" aspect about bikes. You can get just as "gear dorky" about bikes as you can about guitars, pickups, tuners, pedals, amps, tubes...

I like old bikes. I especially like old touring bikes. I like the classic lines of a horizontal top tube, and IMO the more graceful appearance of the 70s and 80s parts.

My main bike is a 1985 Trek 620. It's a beautiful, comfortable bike. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to build it up to how I imagine my "ultimate" bike to be. Right now, it's the the stock frame/fork, saddle, seatpost, rack and crankset. The wheels that are on there are some old Atom hi-flange hubs laced to some Mavic rims. I've redone the shifting to the old Suntour Command Shifters- they allow you to shift from on the hoods. Although I'm much more comfortable with downtube shifters than I was 3 years ago- shifting from the bars is just "better." To get more dorky about it, I paired those shifters with an old Suntour XC Pro rear derailleur and the stock Sachs/Huret Pilot front derailleur. I have a little tweaking to do with the shifters/brake levers/hoods, but overall, I'm quite happy with them. For someday down the road- I'd like to get a set of front and rear Surly Nice Racks, and some fancy pants blingy Phil Wood touring hubs lace to some old Wolber or Rigida touring rims.

My "go fast" bike (which I'm sure someone can go fast on it, but not me) is a 1979 Trek 736. I refer to it as "Birthday Bike" because I scored it on my birthday last year. It's got a full Shimano Arabesque 600 group on it- with the exception of the headset. It's a wonderfully light bike with a 531 steel frame and that 1970s old school Trek cache.

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg29/scaled.php?server=29&filename=hpim4677v.jpg&res=landing

My favorite "mountain" bike is my 1984 Stumpjumper. It's kind of a tank, but it's such a nice ride. I need to find another saddle for it, although I'm thinking about trying to recover the torn Avocet Gel saddle on there now.

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg13/scaled.php?server=13&filename=picture001cg.jpg&res=landing

As far as the "wish list" of bikes... I'd love to find an old chrome Paramount tourer- that would be slick. As for a "someday when I stumble across $8000" bike- I'm going to have Dave Wages of Ellis Cycles build me a bike- chrome, all fillet brazed- headtube, seat tube and bottom bracket... Someday.

I rode my Surly Long Haul Trucker down the Oregon Coast the first week of June last year. The steel frame and Brooks leather saddle are a surprisingly smooth ride. The 60 pounds of gear in four panniers was a bit much.

I did not read that. I did not read that. I did not read that......

Bianchi San Jos8 - added an 8 speed internal geared hub. It was originally a single speed.

How hard was it to add the 8 speed hub? How much would it cost to do something like this? I can't dig a bike if it doesn't have multiple gearing.

That commuter looks really nice too. :-)

I bought the Shimano Alfine hub and Sun CR18 rims and had a shop build the geared hub into the rim.

As far as cost, you're probably better off buying a complete bike with IGH if you really want to go with internal gearing like a Trek Soho. The shifters are an extra expense as well when doing it yourself and add an extra expense and cable routing.

The Bianchi San Jose was my main commuter bike for years. Had it set up as a fixie to compensate for the mediocre brakes. A good, rugged commuter.

Quite a bit of San Jose love on here! I rode one for several months as my main 'grab and go bike' (many of the places I ride are very flat) but after I got that Surly 1x1 built up, I pretty much decided it (with a set of Kevlar 26x1.5s) was better for most of my needs. Granted it wasn't as smooth or as fast, but a few of the routes I like to take are through historic areas with some brick streets.

Really liked that bike though and I thought it was a great value. I bought it used but in perfect condition and sold it about 15 months later for about a $50 loss plus a set of tires and a new chain. ~$120 for a year's use ain't too bad. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Couple more pics I found looking for pics of my San Jose.

This was my only road bike for a number of years, an old school (pre-Trek) Klein with Campy Veloce/Chorus mix and I put the Brooks on. It was my first Brooks. Contrary to many users, I found I really liked this (and one other) Brooks for rides of up to ~30 miles, even after several thousand miles and five or six years, I never was comfortable on it for 50+ mile rides. I tried every angle and fore and aft adjustment.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Photosig/2188382-16f3826fa3c4bb3f.jpg

Bought this one to flip a few years ago and held on to it for two years during which it was my main road bike. When I bought it, it had a set of 700x20 or 21s and though there are several areas I ride that I can't ride with such tires, boy... you sure get used to that extra speed! Really liked this one but alas, too many bikes and I though I liked the speed, I definitely preferred the steel Bianchi.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/DSC_6520a1.jpg

Each year in Clearwater, I buy a bike to ride while on vacation then sell it before we return. Last year, I rode this (my saddle, bag and lights).

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/P1010147a1.jpg

The year before, I bought this hipster-ized older Panasonic (again, saddle and bags are mine):

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh248/cratz2/Bikes/IMG_0279a1.jpg

Both cheapies that were flipped without a loss after a couple hundred miles use. Goes to show how much enjoyment can be realized from a small expenditure.

I ordered a Colnago MasterLight chromed and lugged steel frame today that is still handmade in an Italian basement by 4 craftsmen. I'll post it when I get it. It's Ferrari red!

I always wanted one of those. I had no idea you guys were going to carry Colnago! Very cool.

Yeah that would ruin my day!

Hey how do you like your EDGE (ENVE) wheels? They are just up the road from me and I've been eyeing a set of their 3.4's.

I have Edge 65s and Enve 25s. I like them. I typically used a 65 front with a disc on my TT bike. I'll use the 25s when the crosswind is a bit too much for me and/or there's lots of climbing. I just used them in the Joe Martin uphill time trial and improved my time from last year by about 50 seconds.

I've used Zen Cyclery as an Enve wheel builder. My 25s have a low spoke count and very light hubs since I don't weigh much.

I gave my road bike and mountain bikes away once I discovered the Electra Townie. I have a 21 speed that I've been riding for about 5 years and a new 7 speed i picked up for this year. By far these are the most comfortable and enjoyable bikes I've ever owned. Here's a generic pic of the Townie 7 I bought:

I think that's part of the point of a Bianchi. I get the occasional flack from a Bianchi fanatic because my T-Cube is predominantly white. Locally, there aren't any clubs sponsored by Bianchi shops, so I decided to go with something a little more conducive to local team kits.

6-1 but shrinking!

I had to order a 64 for Austin Crosier former Indiana Pacer recently and we had to do 130-140mm handlebar stem, I believe he is 6'8". A 65 is the largest production frame in the industry.

I've been able to get out quite a bit lately. Around 250 miles in the last 3 weeks. Thankfully my wife knows I'm a better father if I get out and exercise for a spell. I went 50 today on m Waterford 2200 w/Dura Ace. I'll get a pic sometime. I stuck $25/month all through college and told myself that whatever I had at the end would go to a new bike once I graduated. I wound up with about $4k and specced it out to a "t". That was 10 years ago and I still think it is smooth as silk. Sure there are lighter and faster bikes, but there's only one that reminds me of what focus and hard work can do. I'm no racer, but I'm very proud of my discipline and make no apologies for the bike I have.

My other is a 95 s works Mtn. bike. In the cool blue/ gray/purple color. I've ridden that one to hell and beyond and hope to do trans IA on it next year if I'm able.

Love the rasta paint by the way!
