View Full Version : I need help picking a delay...

Title says it all...
Price range is up to $450 dollars.

I currently own a MXR Carbon Copy BUT, All of my other pedals are top notch effects (Analogman, Skreddy, Wren and Cuff, Sweetsound, etc...)...

So I would like to get the most heavenly delay but there is just SO much top choose from...

I'm looking for the following options:
-True bypass (a real 3dpdt TRUE BYPASS switch)
-AWESOME switchable Tape echo sounds.
-Dual setting if possible
-Analog in nature made with TOP quality parts.
-It has to be PP2+ friendly.

I have been checking out the Empress Vintage Modified Delay and it looks like the top contender so far... but is it Analog? How does the "preset" option work as far as easy access?? IS IT REALLY WORTH $450??

There's also the Skreddy Echo... BUT the tape emulator is engaged all the time even if turned all the way down (so I have heard)...

I can go to my local shop and play a VMSD, but I can't do the same with a Skreddy

To sonically explain my want:
I want a LUSH-BEAUTIFUL analog delay with switchable LUSH tape echo sounds made at the same BOUTIQUE quality levels as my other effects... tap tempo would be cool but is not necessary...

I'm gonna get something tomorrow so leem know what you all think ASAP!!! :D

I'm with you too. Been toying with a few delay choices and I...(like you)... will spend for quality. I have been thinking between the Malekko 919, RedWitch Titan, and my favourite so far, Diamond memory lane. The only thing holding me back from buying is that I want true stereo in and true stereo outs analog delay. I don't think anyone makes this.

That's a tall order for an analog delay you got there. I don't think the VMSD is analog. If I were you, I'd look into getting a Diamond Memory Lane, a TimeFactor or a Timeline. Although the last two are digital, they're the top rated delays in the market right now IMO.

since "top notch" is your aim, i'd start with Diamond, DMM, Timefactor, Timeline & Fulltone Tube Tape & work your way down from there.

maybe check out the pigtronix echolution. Analog voiced, buffered bypass though... hmmm 15 volts too, I believe...

I haven't owned a Skreddy Echo, but played one recently, and will own one someday. It's digital. I don't care. It is LUSH LUSH LUSH like you want. I didn't notice any modulation when I turned the mod knobs down, but I wasn't listening critically for it.

Usually, I don't dig modulated delays, but I was lost in love for the LUSH mod sounds the Skreddy delivers. And the straight delay sounds great, too.

I'd be more than happy with a board that just had a Skreddy Screw Driver, a Skreddy Lunar Module, and a Skreddy Echo on it.

Lots of other good delays out there, of course. If you really want analog BBDs, the Diamond Memory Lane offers those plus the modern features. The Maxon AD-999 Pro is another analog contender.

an analog delay with switchable tape sounds? good luck. all the tape emulators are digital.

maxon ad999 is great for an analog delay. skreddy echo is great for a tape emulator. i have both.

Have a really nice DMM modded by Howard Davis the designer of the DMM in the forum. IMO you won't find a better sound in a delay pedal. Especially If your going for tape-like tones.

I have a Red Witch Titan that I might be interested in selling or trading for a simpler delay + cash. Three independent delays that can be run in series or in parallel, fx loop, top-quality build/sound. PM me if interested.

The DMB Lunar Echo looks really cool. 100% analog, kinda dirty tape-like repeats, subtle or intense ("wrecked") modulation, fx loop for the repeats and expression out for delay time to make up for no tap tempo. Also PP2+ friendly. I'm planning on getting one eventually, don't got the funds at the moment though.

digital but the strymon el cap seems to be nice

Easy, use 2 separate analog delays. It will sound better in stereo if the delay times are slightly different anyways. Plus, this way you can even mix 2 different delays together!

wait, so you want an analog that simulates a tape echo...in analog? that doesn't compute.

you're either gonna have to get a tape echo and an analog and switch between the two, or you can grab a Timeline. the dBucket and dTape modes are incredible. just listen to the demos and you'll get the idea.

It is great, and I know where you can get a used one for cheap #shamelessspam

Well, I just found EXACTLY what I want... (and yes, it is 100% Analog with a tape simulator :D)

The Diamond Memory Lane 2 :drool:drool:drool:drool

It has everything I want but it is $100 more... and by the clips that I have heard, it sounds like it is worth every penny..... thoughts anyone???

If it's what you want, then get it ;)

Why take such a bourgeoisie stance?

Plenty of excellent delays around that are cheap yet outdo most pricier options.
But from your criteria, Analogman ARDX20 with Amaze0, Diamong Memory Lane 2, JHS Panther Delay, Rocketride FEOTM, EHX DMM wTT.

While this is digital, get TC Electronics Flashback Delay. It's clean, quiet, excellent tone and outstanding reproduction of a tape delay (which is what I use it for mostly). It is TRUE BYPASS and has a Tone Print function that allows you to download professional sample settings from their website. The Analog delay setting sounds bitchen as well. I dare you to tell the sonic difference between this pedal and another 'analog' delay pedal blindfolded. Biggest bang for the buck. Why mess with a real tape echo when they are so tempermental? To each their own, I guess.

This, very much so. Some people place FAR too much faith in 'boutique'. As if it has to be a vastly superior product just because some guy put it together in his basement from parts he bought from banzai (etc). I'd rather have a well-made PCB than some of the rat's nests that pass off as 'boutique'.

As for the OP, as much as it pains me to say it, the Strymon TimeLine might be the closest to what you seek in functionality.

However, I too would be inclined to opt for the ML2. With that said, I have to recommend the Carl Martin EchoTone. I don't own one, but in the demos, the tone is stellar.

Its funny how he comes off like he uses these pedals. then he asked someone if it's an anolog delay.

Huh. I like my Vox Time Machine, which has been an indispensable staple on my board for years. Yeah, I know, it's not boutique. But for $150 bucks I got a good low-fi tape echo emulation, and of utmost importance to me, tap tempo. Probably some of these $500 units you guys are talking about have tap tempo as well, but I never shopped them because the day that I can drop $500 on a stomp box will never come. Very satisfied with the Time Machine. As is Joe Satriani, apparently.

The carbon copy is a great delay and I'm highly envious of any board where its apparently the suckiest thing on there.
