Hi guys,

I was thinking of trying out the Raw Vintage tremolo springs and have two questions.

1. Would there be enough tension from using all 5 of the springs to allow the tremolo on a Fender Stratocaster (using 10-52 gauge Pyramid Nickel Classic strings) to be decked flat to the body with the claw screwed all the way in?

2. Would there be any significant tonal benefit from using these springs if my tremolo is decked?

Cheers

Jim

1. Yes

2. I like 'em, but I don't know if significant is the right adjective. Noticeable, maybe. I like them more for the feel I get from the trem with them installed over the previous 2 or 3 spring setup I had before.

I agree completely :) I think you would notice more of a tonal difference if the trem was floating.

I love what they do and feel that it is pretty noticeable but I float...chme...adds chime...sparkle...shimmer and sustain...really is a must for my strats...

I deck my strats bridge.
FWIW, I don't like the RV springs. They made my strat too trebly and pingy if that makes sense. I changed back after a week and my strat sounded better right away. YMMV IMO etc etc...

My lesson in this was the old adage, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" :)

This sounds exactly like my story! The Raw Vintage definitely made a sound difference but with my decked setup it would not hold the bridge down unless it the claw was decked too. Plus I like the more solid tone of my OEM springs. I think if you wanted a looser airy tone for rythme than the RV springs would be good or if you float your bridge and like the loose feel.

Thanks again for all the responses. Some useful advice here. Given what I've read on here so far, I don't think I would see the benefits of the springs having my bridge decked and I can't really justify the extra cost.

How about their saddles - any good?

I've got Raw Vintage springs with all 5 tightened up all the way on my Strat with D'Addario 11-49 strings. It's decked with the claw tightened all the way, but you can still operate the trem in a reasonable fashion. I think they sound great. You can definitely hear them pinging when you hit certain notes. I prefer them over high-tension springs due to being able to deck the trem with all 5 springs and still use the bar. With normal tension springs I was only able to get 3 or 4 in there decked with the trem still operable. 3 or 4 don't sound as alive to me.
