Wonderful! Great camera angles! Shows you all that needs to happen in order to play this instrument at this proficiency.

because they're one of the hardest instruments to play (well)?it is unbelievably hard to get right, I've been at it for a little over 2 years now and it still sounds like a cat in a bag sometimes.:peenut

i'm lucky in that i get to play with a few really really good players. satisfies my steel craving without having to go through all of that work!!

Love that song from Nickle Creek right?
I bought a pedal steel ( Rittenberry SD10) about three years ago.
I am nowhere even as close to playing like Gary Carter... but I recognize his great technique and blocking.
Lessons are mandatory with this instrument. Portland Oregon has a great community of steelers... we get together 2x a year to jam... and they let a beginner like me sit in.

Gary is a master. His work with Connie Smith and Marty Stuart is unreal. This is amazing footage !

He got to do a bit of a spotlight on Marty's show last night, that show is great!

Love seeing pedal steel posts here. Wicked. Gary and BJ are at the top of their game. I love both their playing.
This is me demoing a Line 6 Verbzilla for a few laughs. I'm using a Jackson pedal steel and a 1970 Twin Reverb. I didn't mic the amp or anything. It's just the camera mic you're hearing. Pedal steel is a ball to play:

There's nothing like it. Time to go listen to some Poco (Rusty Young) Mark Knopfler (Paul Franklin) and Desert Rose Band (Jaydee Maness).

Pedal steel is on my list of "to learns."
Any tips and entry level pedal steel suggestions?

David Hartley is an animal. I watch his videos everyday and use his tabs. The guy is among the absolute best of all time.
I figure if others are including clips, I might as well. I've only been on PSG for about two months, so I suck, but here ya go:

I just got my first pedal steel amp this week. This is me poorly trying to play Tom Brumley licks.
Lubin---I would just go for it and buy a used pedal steel...get something quality. some student models will not stay in tune, which I've hear is a nightmare. You can get something great for 1K. My guitar has 3 floors and 4 knees. I think that's a great starting point, as you won't be too overwhelmed, but it's enough to keep you occupied for years.
Half the battle is just getting comfortable on the instrument....learning how to roll on and off pedals...control volume pedal...knowing your grips. Once you sit down and feel like you know what does what...it's much less intimidating.
If you wanna start a little cheaper and see if you like it...lap steel isn't the worst way to go.

Check out the steel guitar forum for all kinds of stuff. Great place to learn all about pedal steel. You can also buy instructional material there.

A search of google didn't turn up much, other than his demo service site. Has he done on any instrumental albums, or guested on anyone else's?
Thanks,
Dan

Those are some great vids. I like the slow stuff, myself.
Go to around 2_05 if you wanna skip all the great musicianship in this tune ;)
The great John Hughey.

^^^ Buttermilk John! He sure was smooth, I spent quite a while trying to learn that song, never could get that one lick towards the end of the solo down.
I sure like those Zumsteels, wish I could afford one. They sold that one John Hughey is playing in that video for somewhere around $6,000 on the steel forum after he died.

John Hughey is a giant amongst musicians, not only steel players.
one note, E9/C6, and you know exactly who you're listening to ...
ALL those Twitty records are a gold mine of Pedal Steel "how to" ...
