All haters; Please start a separate I hate U2 thread. :)

Hard for me to pick just three, but I have always loved these tunes:

"I Will Follow" (my introduction to the band)

g2BqLlVHlWA

"Bad" (live versions, still remains a hugely powerful part of their live set)

aPyhYczii8I

"All I Want Is You" (a song that meant a great deal to me as a mopey, romantic teen, and still invokes that part inside of me)

Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, Bullet in Blue Sky (not sure of title, sorry, I like the grind of the song, slide too)

stick in When Love Comes to Town- just as it's U2's weird take on the blues, but I dig it

I'm not sure I could tell you, but it's pretty likely at least two would be from "Achtung Baby"

Yeah. I'm already regretting the three I chose above because they are all from the earlier period of the band, and Achtung Baby is one hell of an album.

Pride - first song I remember hearing of theirs and going "Holy Cow, what is that!?" Bought the whole back catalog after that.
Streets - Creates such a longing for things hoped for.
One - Just an iconic moment in modern songwriting. It says so much, so simply.

Almost impossible to pick 3. Their whole catalog has meant so much to me over the years. I remember hearing the Unforgettable Fire Cd and crying. Not even knowing why. SO abstract, spiritual and beautiful.

I'm rather unimaginative since all are on my favorite U2 album, but there are a lot of songs that are very, very close to my top 3. As it were, my top 3 are

A Sort Of Homecoming - this one just puts me in a nice place
Bad - great build and release
Wire - an absolutely psychotic riff and song in general. Very dark for U2

Honorable mentions...

Tough to pick only three ... these are personal favorites, not necessarily their "best" or most representative:

"One" -- I don't think they'll ever top this tune, especially lyrically. It got even better on the Zoo TV tour with Edge's solo at the end.

"Until The End Of The World" -- Most of my favorite U2 songs are those that could either be hymns or breakup songs, depending on what the listener wants to hear. This is the champion of that genre.

"Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" -- I lived in eastern Berlin around the turn of the millenium and this song brings back a lot of great, bittersweet memories.

(I can't believe nothing from The Unforgettable Fire made my list!)

And, just because it was so hard, here are three favorite B-sides/rarities:

"Are You Gonna Wait Forever?"
"Spanish Eyes"
"The Sweetest Thing" (the original, not the recent version)

There is NO WAY I can limit it to just 3, but I can go 3 per era:

1st Era: Boy - Wide Awake In America (1980-1986)

1. Pride
2. Bad
3. I Will Follow

2nd Era: The Joshua Tree - Pop (1987-1999)

1. One
2. Where The Streets Have No Name
3. All I Want Is You

3rd Era: All That You Can't Leave Behind - No Line On The Horizon (2000-Present)

1. Beautiful Day
2. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
3. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

It really would have been easier to do 5 from each era!

I was in a relaxed state of mind late on a Sat night and heard An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart come on. I was thinking woW! That is sooo 80s, I was digging it and not knowing it was early U2  It sort of sounded like Bono, so I did a search the next day and found it. That's such a cool song (the full version).

2nd up is: With or Without You. The vocal work just blows me away. Bono has such a great voice and they found a great mic to capture it on tape!

3rd is probably Vertigo.... but not sure. I'm thinking of that song where the Edge does the high falseto thing at the end....

Yeah, 3 albums would be easier to do.

Started playing guitar a year after Joshua Tree came out, and that sound WAS electric guitar, for me. For years following, I put everything I had, playing-wise, straight into the context of that kind of sound. Probably among the most important things I've ever heard in my life, really.

Sidenote: For "Bullet The Blue Sky," Bono apparently told the Edge to "put (the) El Salvador (civil war) through an amplifier." Huge win IMO.

Good grief...only 3 for a band that has had 3 decades + of successful, ground-breaking music? OP must be spanked.

Okay, if only 3, then let's go 1 per decade:

80s: Sunday Bloody Sunday

90s: Zoo Station

00s: Breathe

Honorable mention:

the rest of the Achtung Baby album

the rest of the No Line On The Horizon Album

Similar experience here -- I can still see myself in my room with a Yamaha acoustic, strumming and picking furiously to try to get that sound, not realizing that the Edge had something called an Echoplex....

Finally figured it out about a year in. :nuts
