This wasn't rare in its day (ca. 1905-1910), but you're not likely to see another guitar that old in this condition. There's no brand marking, and I'm told by an appraiser that it could have been built by a number of builders (probably in Chicago). That's the original leather case.

My Martin PS2, which was the 2nd iteration of a Paul Simon signature model.
I'm still not entirely sure why this is a Paul Simon model, as I've never seen him play anything like it. All I really care is that it's a beautiful guitar and I'm glad I ran across it in a local shop at the time that I was shopping specifically for a high-end acoustic guitar.

Essentially, it's a really nice rosewood/spruce 000-28 with some fancy inlays.
I've never seen another, though 200 were made.

It plays beautifully and sounds every bit as good as it looks.

Oh, and here's the Martin website description of the model:

nmiller,
That is one seriously cool guitar. It would make my millennium to find such a rare beauty somewhere. I love OO size guitars, or anything close to that size, and also thin body acoustic or electric archtop guitars. Cool post.

It's spruce and Brazilian rosewood with a mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and some unknown lighter wood used in the binding and purfling. There's a bit of bear claw pattern in the top, but you have to hold it at the right angle to see it. The guitar is extremely light even for a gut-stringed parlor. It's 12 5/8" across the lower bout, the smallest but probably the most common size for the time.

There was a slight bow in the neck when I got it, but I had it heat-straightened and now it plays perfectly all the way up. The uncompensated saddle leads to intonation problems up the neck, but that's pretty common on guitars this old. I use it for sitting on the couch and writing songs. You can hear it on this recording (http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11467468), where I wanted nylon strings for a more "Spanish" feel.

The guitar actually has extensive finish checking, probably due to long-term humidity damage, but it's so fine and uniform that it looks like a matte finish in person and barely even registers in photographs. You can see it in the "sugary" texture in the photo of the neck joint. The bridge has been professionally re-seated at some point, but it's original just like the rest of the guitar.

OK-not terribly rare, but this was a great guitar that you don't see every day. This one gave my J-200 a run for its money.

Just got this one, a '93 Guild F30R "Paul Simon Model," about 100 made for its entire production run, an odd duck since it doesn't have the dimensions of a "real" F30R - it's more of a minijumbo in the 80s Gruhn-era vein. With that Everly Bros. twist like the guitar above.
