View Full Version : Should I go see Guthrie Govan with the Aristocrats next Saturday?

So, I have a rare Saturday night off next week, and the Aristocrats are playing a club about 5 miles down the street from my house.
My excuses for not going: The cover is $20. I'm gigging real late Friday night, and again all day Saturday, starting pretty early in the morning. I won't have much time for a nap. I'm afraid it will be non-stop, guitar wanking, music store licks.
Reasons to go: Dude can play. Not a lot of chances to see him or other acts like this here in town.
Who's seen them live? Should I go?

My guess is you'll be plenty awake once that thing gets going. Won't need coffee or anything.
Dude, you know the answer. Go.

I'm in Lexington...been thinking about going to the show also, but probably 50/50. As awesome as he is, I also worry that the show will be void of fun and more like a 50 minute shredfest.

That's part of my dilemma. It's in a really small club with a pretty average PA. I'm kind of worried that it will be a REALLY LOUD shredfest.

Yeah, I should probably go, I've been a fan ever since way back when he was doing lessons in Guitar Techniques Mag. I would definitely have to go alone which is kind of a drag...there is nobody in my social circles who would even have a clue who he is, and my son is to young to go. I think it's an 18 or 21 and over show.

1- Watch a few clips on YT from their live shows
2- See how tired you are on Saturday
3- Decide if you really want to go

1:- If you go and it sucks.. well too bad, that is the way it goes. At least you saw him play.
2:- If you don't go and you find out later it was awesome...you will regret it!!
Don't live in regret. GO!!!!!
Let'scface it the guy can play better than 98% of us out there...wether you like his style is another matter...you can always take in what he his doing!!

Yep, go down mate! Always good to support live music, especially being performed by a musician of the caliber of Guthrie!

lots of chops, yes
lots of fun, if the show I saw in Raleigh was typical, tons of fun. Lots of positive musical interaction. Marco is a beast:rimshot
The show was completely different from the clinic - I'd say go

It'll be $20 well spent.
I took a clinic with Govan last fall (just happened to be in the right place at the right time) and after that was kicking myself for not catching the Aristocrats show the night before.
He's a shredder, sure, but he's a very musical shredder.

Go.
As much as he is an amazing and versatile player, what always strikes me is how personable he seems and how he's able to break down what he does to something an idiot like me can understand. Seems like a really great guy.

Search on YouTube for wonderful slippery thing in pistoia - Not at all what I'd expect from a shredder.....
Like someone said - very musical and a great show

You owe it to yourself to go. It's no shredfest, just amazing playing by 3 monsters.

That show has been killing me since I heard about it. I've got a gig across town at another venue that starts at 9:30. So, sadly, I will be playing when Guthrie is playing.
Here's what ya do. Go check out Guthrie, take some video, and then run over to my gig and show me the video. :)
Better talk Guthrie in to coming with you. :) Hope you dig the show man.

Speaking of, I've played that venue several times. You want to get there early and get a place to sit or stand. It gets tight when there's more than 25-30 people in there.

Yeah, it's not really my favorite place for several reasons I won't go into here. Where are you playing and who with?

I've seen them twice, and would again without hesitation. All 3 of these guys are top notch. Great interplay amongst them, incredible arrangements. It's not like the D & B are just background tracks for the guitar to whank over. It's not like that at all. It is three incredibly talented players making great music. If you don't have this cd, I highly recommend getting it. It's well produced, yet sounds just like the three of them playing. Very few overdubs. Marko will blow your mind! I saw him on his B-day, and he got to do an extra long solo, leaving many jaws on the floor! If you dig super energetic drumming like Terry Bozzio, this dude's got it in spades. Oh, they indulge in a fair bit of comedy at times during the show. Very entertaining fellas!

@screamtone: I feel the same way about that venue from past experience. However, it seems like they've got somebody doing some serious booking there.
I'm playing at Phoenix Hill Tavern in the Taproom with my cover band KTO.

I saw The Aristocrats during NAMM week at Alvas and they were great. Wonderful musical interplay and great humor too.The songs came off even stronger than on the record and they played some nice selections from each band member's solo catalog. Also Marco M. live is an absolute treat to witness! I'm going to see them again when they shoot their DVD at Alvas in June.

All of them can play. I would go for Marco Minnemann alone.
