View Full Version : Anybody perfectly content with the guitars they own?

We see so many threads on what people want or are looking for, it almost feels like heresy around here to stand up and say "I have the guitar or guitars I want and don't want another!"

I'm satisfied with the guitars I have in that I don't have any 'disappointments', but at the same time, there's always room for more...

I am satisfied with every guitar I have.
I have a Tele, Strat and Guild Starfire IV that I love. These 3 are keepers.

But that doesn't mean I have stopped looking for others I am perfectly content with want to make a keeper. There are 3 specific guitars that I am searching for and once I have one of each that I am content with, my search will be pretty much done.

I have two that I could be absolutely happy with and sell the rest. In fact I could sell one of them as well and be perfectly happy with just the one.

If I never got another guitar, the ones I've got now would last me for the rest of my life. I have good stuff that works, plays, and sounds magnificent.

Having said that, I see no reason to deny myself a little GAS relief once in a while.

I owned a boat load of top end guitars.. gibson historics (54, 57, 58, 59.. multiples of some), PRS beauties including the hollowbody, custom shop strats, nocasters, Collings, small builders.. the list could fill a freaking small boutique guitar store.

Today, I own one.. my Gibson Nashville 1959 Historic blond ES 335.

Not that I don't get the urge.. or still appreciate the beauty of other instruments..

Last night I brought home an Angry Angus T-Style.. beautiful nocaster look, thick neck, lollars.. played great, sounded great.. but then I plugged in the 335 and put the Angry Angus back in the case to take back to my friends store.. I have done that lately with the ES 330.. same results.

So, while I guess I am perfectly content.. sometimes it takes fooling around with another girl to make you realize what you have at home :)

So now.. I am playing with pedals.. heheh.. and it is not nearly as expensive!

I'm totally thrilled to finally have two Strats I will never sell!
Both have Warmoth necks. One has Sliders pickups, the other Dimarzio's.
Great wood..... ya got to have great wood.

I'm certainly happy with the guitars I have, but there are a few things I'd like to acquire, but they aren't not necessary.

I'm very happy with the guitars that I have. I want a bunch more, but honestly, I really only have room for one... Waiting for the funding and I'll fill the last spot. I certainly don't "need" it.

I've had up to 8 guitars at a time, right now I have one acoustic and one electric. Couldn't be happier. I just moved and was disappointed in myself at the amount of crap I had accrued. Less is more let me tell you

I have stopped most of my impulse buying of guitars using the question, "Do I really need this guitar for playing? Or am I just taken with its looks or collectibility?" Honestly, I have enough guitars to cover any style or sound I need to make on stage (or just playing with others).

These days the only guitars I buy tend to be super-inexpensive finds that I "play" with, in terms of electronics, etc. And even then, it's just one every other month or so. My latest is a Standard Squier with a nice cherry sunburst that I got for $50. I'm putting in GFS Texas wounds into it today, maybe.

So yeah, if a truly amazing axe came along (and I had the cash to buy it) I'd probably buy "one more", but I'm not actively looking. I should probably just unload ten of my rarely played guitars for whatever I can get for them, just to make some room.

I am happy with mine. I have 20 and play every one of them. Love tinkering with guitars, keeping up with the maintenance. 5 of them are partscasters by me. I do have a Gibson eds 1275 double neck that doesn't get much action and might be looking to sell.

Every time I pick up my tele I think, "yeah, I could be happy with just this." then I play my semi-hollow and think, "yeah, I could be happy with just this." then I play an SG at the guitar shop and think... well, you know.

I'm up to about 15 guitars I love them all. I'm in 3 bands and I use different guitars in different tunings for each band. One band is tuned down a half step so I use a couple Ebmm EVH's and a Les Paul for that one, the other is an original band that's in pitch and I use a tele and 2 Les Paul's and a couple PRS's. Then I have backups for each. But I love buying guitars and trading to try something different.

One flat-top, home-built from lumber circa 1990 (German spruce, Brazilian, ebony).

One electric, '58 ES-225T

One jazz box, '36 Gibson L-75 (I had and lost a couple of these over the last 20 years)

It's a joy to have these. I am so lucky. Each is so much more guitar than I am guitarist.

i'm pretty content. have most bases covered. strats, teles, LP-style, Danelectro, scalloped fretboard, hollow-body, semi-hollow, 6-string acoustic, 12-string acoustic, two classicals, lap steel....

all i need now is a resonator and i will have my complete collection. ahhhhh......

there's guitars styles i'd love to add, like an SG, and a Firebird....but not really needed. and i could always trade one of the guitars i have for those.

so yeah, i'm pretty damn content. and have all the pedals i want...except for an Ernie Ball volume pedal.

Right now my only guitar is a Fender CS '65 relic in lake placid blue. I've put a mint green pickguard on it and 3 silver Lace Sensors. It is a pretty amazing guitar, but I do wish it had a flatter fb radius. I also would prefer maple fb over rosewood, and I love the large late 60's headstock. SS frets would be sweet too.
My next guitar will have these qualities.

After years of trading guitars, I've found what works best for me. My favorite guitar is a PRS Starla, with a Bigsby. I've got three of them. I also have a PRS Standard 22, with a stopbar, tailpeice. I was thinking that I could sell one of the Starla's, for an all mahogany PRS, with a 6 screw Tremelo.

Got a Les Paul, Telecaster, Stratocaster and a Guild D-55 acoustic. I'm good. Thanks.

In whittled mine down from 12 to 4.
Three of them get used regularly and one is too nice to sell off.
I've thought about getting one more but no matter how hard I try, I can't think of any guitar I need. The ones I have are perfect for what I do.
So I am happy with mine and I do believe I'm done guitar shopping. Yeah, that 's hard for me to believe too but it's the truth.

I have 5, down from triple that a few years ago. I think I could drop down a couple more, so do I answer yes, no or maybe? My gear is actually much better than my playing ability and I play and sound pretty much the same no matter what gear I am using. That's probably what leads to my dissatisfaction.

I work (at music) for a living, so the toolbox always needs to stay loaded and interesting. With that said, I am very happy to have more than enough, i.e. there are certain songs that only sound and feel right on either the Strat or LP (but not both)...the Tele is the beater workhorse (and has a humbucker so covers all bases), and the Firebird was born to play raw blues slide on. The acoustic Seagull Slim is perfect for those times when the power goes out during a storm, but it may be on the chopping block when my other F-bird comes in...one thing I ain't, and that's a collector. Nothing collects dust around here (except the Samick acoustic/electric that needs a new nut.)

But I love the feeling when a new guitar finds me...cooler than a new girlfriend, and less stressful (though not always less expensive).

Well, maybe not cooler than a girl. Let me take that back.

Man, I wish I could afford to find the perfect acoustic! Trouble is that I know what it is, I just can't afford it :)

an MJT strat
a Les Paul

I'd really like to pick up a Gretsch Tennessee Rose, Gretsch Anniversary or a ES-335.

I'm not inclined to be content.

But I'm not shopping for anything until I sell some; and I'm not selling anything until it gets real painless (fewer vultures and bargain hunters) to sell.

Then, why I'll start back to assembling more existing projects for a long time before I buy any whole guitars.

You could say I am for now, content not to be content.

I went ahead and voted no, because if I'm being honest with myself, I know I will always continue to add more guitars to my stock -- but not out of any dissatisfaction with what I have. Right now I currently have (meaning, at 5:40am and without going into my studio to check my early-morning memory):

'88 Les Paul Standard
'09 R8 Les Paul Standard
'12 Les Paul Classic Custom
'01 SG Special
'09 SG Standard
'09 SG '61 RI
Gretsch 6196T
JG Bluesmaster
Kauer Daylighter, Jr.
Koll Duo Glide
American Deluxe Telecaster
HWY 1 Telecaster
Custom mahogany Tele
Custom '72 Thinline Tele
Custom La Cabronita
DiPinto Belvedere
DiPinto Mach V
Reverend Manta Ray
Gibson ES-335
Gibson Firebird V
'72 Fender Jaguar
Taylor K-14C acoustic
Gibson Dove acoustic

And a few more like a banjitar, a banjo, an Epiphone, etc.

I have just about every tonal sound covered for my tastes, but I *know* that I will see some other gorgeous guitar that I just can't live without, and I'll buy it. I'm also a sucker for fixing-up/repairing guitars. If I HAD to get rid of all of them except 1, 2 or 3 -- I *do* which ones I would keep, though.

- If I could only keep one, I'd keep my '88 Les Paul Standard
- Two? my '88 and my Dove
- Three? My '88, Dove, and my 335

For the most part, yeah... I'm pretty happy. I actually am planning on getting rid of two or three and consolidating two into one and selling the leftover.

I do want to get a decent jazz box though... probably a Peerless Manhattan. That should cost about the same as the sell-off will yield.

Amps on the other hand... man... Two cheapies (THR 10 and a Fender Excelsion) and two pricier (Morgan AC20 Deluxe head and an Allen Accomplice) are just the 'must haves' on my current list.

I have a wonderful Tele (actually an Asat Classic with Tele pickups) with a middle Strat pickup, a phenomenal acoustic, an equally great resonator, and a nice lap steel. I can make any music I want to on those guitars. However, I'd love to have a Strat, an Asat Deluxe (2 Duncan humbuckers, mahogany body with maple top), a 6-string banjo, an acoustic slide guitar (like this (http://www.banjo.com/Gold_Tone_PBKG_Paul_Beard_Squareneck_Resonator_Gui _p/rggtpbkg.htm)), an ES335-style guitar, and a jazz hollowbody. So...I'm content in that I need nothing else and I'm not killing myself to acquire anything else, but I doubt I ever completely cure myself of GAS.

I've generally been an acoustic player, and knew what I wanted a long time back - Martin.

Got that, but my inner rocker wanted an outlet, so I bought a Strat VG, thinking it would cover all bases. Uh, no, every time I went to GC I kept reaching for Telecasters. So I sold the Strat and bought an 8502 Tele. Awesome guitar, ain't goin' nowhere ever.

BUT, hmm, maybe something with humbuckers? Plus I started to really listen to Joe Bonamassa, so perhaps a Les Paul? Bought 2 and returned both. Just not me.

Bought a Korean-manufacture Epiphone 335. Nice guitar, did lots of mods, sounded pretty nice. Ok, maybe not, sold it to fund a "real" 335.

Gibson J Bonamassa '61 reissue ES335. Killer looks, sound, incredible quality! Even got it signed by JB at concert.

So I think I'm good. But sometimes think I'd be ok with just the Martin and Tele, as long as I keep my Dr Z Maz18.

Nelson89
05-26-2012, 06:55 PM
I get most of the tones i need from the guitars i already own...

American Special Hard Tail Strat (SSS)
Reverend Reeves Gabrels Signature (HH with Hot Rails in the neck and "bass contour")
Musicman Silhouette Special (HSS)
Ibanez Artcore AGS83BBG (HH...semi hollow body)

If anything there may be a Standard Tele sometime in the future and maybe a Les Paul or Duo Jet (wouldn't get both) of some description, but i'm happy to wait a few years for those.

Acoustics...i only have two, a Maton and a Simon and Patrick and to be honest, ever since i got the Simon and Patrick, i've NEVER desired another acoustic guitar, the Maton is setup for slide guitar these days.

This poll struck a nerve for me. I am lucky enough to have an absolutely marvelous collection of wonderful guitars. Vintage stuff, new stuff, cheap stuff, expensive stuff. More than any sane, rational person would ever hope for.

This Christmas, I was rationalizing what to get myself. I decided on an SG with P-90's. Not that I didn;t have SG's (I had two) or that I needed a Gibson with P-90's (I have 2 Les Paul Specials, a Junior, a Firebird III, etc). So I thought I'd buy a relatively inexpensive SG Classic. But I really didn't like the faded finish and I'd rather have a stop bar than a tunematic. I bought a '62 SG Special instead. Nice guitar. But I really didn't need it. But WTF? I can afford it.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/Mattbedrock/IMG_0673.jpg

So I haven't bought a guitar in months (good for me) but I saw a concert poster for, of all people, Melissa Ethridge, playing a single cut Les Paul Jr in vintage sunburst. It looked cool. And I don't have one. I do have a double cutaway Jr. And a couple of Specials. But no SC LP Jr... So I am shopping again. Like a dope.

So I am happy with my collection. But there always seems to be one more.

Depends on what you mean by satisfied. My current group of guitars covers all of my bases pretty well, and all I really want/am saving for is a set of Kinman pickups for my strat. I have a Les Paul, a Strat, a Carvin Superstrat, and a ES-333, as well as a couple of basses and a couple of acoustics. While a Tele or a PRS might be nice to add to the collection, I don't feel any real need for another guitar. The most likely scenario as I can see it is perhaps getting a new/used guitar as a 10-year anniversary gift in a few years, maybe an R6 or something that I know would be a keeper. So yes I'm satisfied and feel no need to buy anything else right now, but no I'm not because I plan on modding my strat and am thinking about the possibility of adding something else a few years down the line...

I was.
Until I got the latest issue of GP and saw the sea foam green Ibanez/Vai guitar.
Don't know why, but that color with that guitar works for me.
Before this, I would not have bought a Vai guitar; just too much of a "fan boy"
guitar for my tastes.(and I've been a fan of Vai's since I bought "Flexable" on vinyl
in the black record sleeve all those years ago!)
But the sea foam green looks very nice and sort of elevates the guitar to a
non-signature model "look".
Go figure...

I am mainly a bass player but I must say that I am now very content with the guitars that I own.I have a Madeira 12 string acoustic,a Madeira 6 string Acoustic, Martin Sigma D41 acoustic, Dillion Les Paul Extreme, Dillion Firebird, 83 Squire E-series Contemporary Strat, S-500 Tribute G&L strat, custom made Tele,Ibanez axd83p semi hollow single cut with Gibson p94's,82 Westone thunder 1, and last but not least my Hamer Echotone (es-335 copy)and of course my 8 Bass guitars. The only guitar that I really want is a DeAngelico Hollow Body Jazz Box.If you notice I don't have many big name guitars and I know the new DeAngelico is made in Korea but still their attention to detail and the tones you can get from them ,Just sayin that is the last one that I want.

I just got my 'Git count back down to 3 after this past week...or so I thought (LOL). Had an extensive Collection twice, and in the past few months had built it somewhat back up on the electric end...Then I had a Thought..Keep just what will get me by and catch up on other things, Including some of my chops back after a couple of years off. So, I've sold/ traded off most, and kept in my line-up-

1) Fender Amstd. Strat. hand picked for a Friend by a Fender Rep. (and Yes, It matters..LOL..Killer guitar)

2) Fender American Deluxe. Same situation as above, FANTASTIC NECK (Cherryburst finished, Ash body...Color to me ..meh..LOL)

3) Yamaha LLX16, Keep this acoustic over some other Higher $$$ ones due to..It is a GREAT guitar..Full body Dread. with ART 60 electronics (The best onboard electronics I've ever played) and I love the ebony fretboard and the Rosewood body.

As I said, was done..Then my Wife overheard my (and always talking about, I guess) How I wanted to put together my "own" guitar...take one, no matter Strat. or Tele., and she bought me a '05 MIM Strat. HSS that had NEVER been played, and gave it to me for my Birthday this weekend (a couple weeks early, But, thats cool) The 'git is pretty cool, and the Red Wine finish is awesome..Tex-Mex pick-ups, Neck and middle (I don't know what is in the bridge yet for that year..ain't got that far..LOL) But, It has a GREAT neck..and I told her (even with the dead strings) these p-ups Don't sound Bad at all..May just need a wiring harness. But, anywho, I'm back to 4...and for right now...I'm Happy. Tom

Yes, well. . .

Have an archtop that sounds exactly like I want, but has the shorter 24.75" scale. So, I have a custom on order with a 25.5" scale. Should be good for archtops then.

Have my cheapy AXL that scratches the Strat itch perfectly. Plus I've had it long enough and have tweaked it so much that I've just permanently bonded with it.

Have a hand-made classical that satisfied an eleven-year case of classical "gas." Went through maybe fifteen guitars to get this one. Hippner. Fantastic spruce and brazilian singer.

Got a Seagull 25th Anniversary that I bought new four years ago. Just can't imagine wanting more out of a "better" name.

Am teaching myself that less is sometimes more.

I've gone thru several guitars in the last 3-4 years and after I sold an SG Standard and LP Studio Faded to get a PRS McCarty a month ago, I am perfectly content. I've got 8 now, a Strat, Tele, the PRS, LP Special, Reverend with P90s, a parts Tele with P90s and mahogany body, Taylor acoustic, and a P bass. For the bands I play in, these cover everything and then some. I'm good.

I have almost all the parts for a Telemaster I am going to build. Not that I need it, but I have wanted to build my own for 30 years. Just something I need to try. However I can see how building them could easily become a new obsession! The Musikraft neck I just ordered feels so amazing I will consider getting one instead of a refret. It is half the cost!

My used Soloway Swan does what I tell it to do and keeps me happy.

I have a few guitars that I'm utterly content with: my Buddy Blaze 7-string prototype, my '62 Strat Reissue, my new Les Paul Traditional, my Taylor SolidBody (killer dirty tones) and a pretty beaten-up Ibanez RG7620 with DiMarzio Blaze pickups (taken out of my UV777BK, which got a Crunch Lab and LiquiFire set in their place). I have a few others too, but I get the feeling I'd be MORE content if I also had an American Select Telecaster, an SG, maybe one of the old ESP Hetfield Explorer-type models, a Trussart or four, an EBMM Axis, a big fat Gretsch, a PRS Signature Limited...

+ an acoustic (US Wechter)

I'd really like one fewer, but can't part with any of these right now...

I'm really happy with these, though.
