I am a long time Marmite user, but, I am now a vegemite convert. Vegemite is cheaper than marmite, a little milder, and easier to use as it does not have the stringy, gloopy consistency of Marmite.

Marmite is superior to Vegemite. Vegemite tastes bland and lifeless compared to the zingy joie de vivre that comes with every bite of a slightly burnt toast slathered with Marmite.

I love marmite! put a little on a piece of warm foccacia and a slice of cheddar and i'm in heaven.

Too bad there's some stupid ass law in Denmark, so stores can't sell it... i think it's one of the ingredients. Right around the corner from my old job, there's an English store where they had a petition for making Marmite legal again. I signed it of course :)

I understand that much...

My questions are--

What the hell is marmite/vegemite? :dunno
How is it possible for Kraft to produce something I've never heard of?
How do all you guys seem to know about it? :waiting

The problem is.. it tastes like nothing else! It's a sticky dark-brown gooey substance that is most commonly spread (sparingly!) on toast, or in sandwiches. It is really quite strong and 'spicey' (perhaps not the right word) and not 'sweet' in any way - but 'savoury'. It's an institution for some cultures around the world, and there is NO middle ground... you either love it or hate it with equal passion! It's one of those things you grow up with.

Vegemite for me. Marmite and Promite suck!

For those who aren't used to the flavour, try spreading vegemite sparingly on toast, topped with sliced tomato and chopped basil. If that doesn't convert you I don't know what will!

Vegemite is THE spread for toast. Try it with some grated parmesan cheese :aok

... you would have of had to of lived in Britain for the last 150 or so years to really have gained an appreciation for the worlds greatest yeast-extract-based breakfast delicacy... :love:It's made from some of the yeast/malt cast offs from the Brewing industry. The main factory in UK is just near Burton upon Trent which is a big brewing town.

Vegimite is similar in some ways but has a different consistency and taste is nowhere near as good IMO. To be fair in the UK Vegimate has very little visibility due to marmite's domination.

A spread made out of Beer, what's not to like :drink

I dont remember ever trying marmite but I love vegemite and promite. A fair few Australians dont like vegemite or cant eat it without butter.

A big jar is fairly cheap and as long as you dont eat it by the spoonful it last a fair while.

Sounds like solidified beer for breakfast.....Yummy

Learned the hard way. It results in massive hangover-like headaches for me in being so ultra sensitive to yeast extract and other additives. If you're sensitive to MSG in particular.... this is not an option as food intake (on toast or whatever.)

Am I to understand that all of these products are yeast derivative food concoctions make from cast-off materials from beer production? If so, does that mean that you guys are arguing over the relative merits of three almost exactly the same products?

BTW I've never heard of, nor obviously never tried, any of these? Are they even available in the USA?

Americans:

This stuff is usually found in the tiny British/International section of your local grocery store, or in places that have fancy or specialty foods.

I've never tried it, but I've always been curious. I guess I'll give it a shot, now that my curiosity's been piqued yet again by this thread. I'll update this thread with my review... and if I throw up, clips...

Since I posted to this thread back in May I went to England in August and tried Marmite. I liked it. If I ate toast regularly I'd try to find some.
