I'm loving this album lately. I think it's a lost classic.

Phil Lynott sounds great on it, and Gary Moore is just...damn.

Anybody else a fan of this album?

One of my all time favorites. Gary is amazing on this and Scott is on top form as well. My favorite Lizzy album.

I grew up on Lizzy and I'm a HUGE Lizzy fan, but Black Rose has always been one of my least fav's, probably b/c of Gary Moore.......couldn't ever really get into him :dunno

On a side note, I got to meet Phil when I was about 14.....Lizzy was opening for Nazareth....pretty cool!!!

Great band, great album. Jaw dropping guitar by Gary Moore.

It's a really strong record.
Gary certainly dominated in the guitar department - overdubbed all parts in many of the harmony leads, etc. Gorham was always my fave Lizzy guitarist, but he was pretty much a full-blown junkie by then. Didn't help that Gary was naturally an aggressive, competitive player.
But, the record has strong writing, confident performances and good production.
A great testament to Moore's time in the band (in/out several times, but only one full studio record).
Respectful nod to their Irish heritage, of course (only Scott non-Irish then).

I'm obsessed with Lizzy and I think it's a great album. Bad Reputation is my fave album, but Black Rose is awesome too, as every song is killer (...except for S&M...)

I like that song. Super slinky. Doesn't really sound like Lizzy until the solo though.

My favorite Lizzy albums were the Gorham-Robertson ones, but Black Rose still makes me juice!

I just picked this up today and am listening for the first time, really enjoying it. I got the greatest hits of Thin Lizzy first and have been slowing picking up the albums. Here is the order I have gotten them in:

Jailbreak
Johnny the Fox
Bad Reputation
Thunder and Lightning
Black Rose: A Rock Legend
Fighting (just picked up too, haven't listened to it yet)

Gotta get:

Chinatown
Renegade
Nightlife (it's not strong all the way through....a couple real gems on there though)

I love Black Rose. My favorite song is Toughest Street in Town, Gary plays a great solo and you can hear his backing vocals. As of course the title track is epic.

totally agree. was lucky enough to see gary with Thin Lizzy in late 78 and they played TSIT as well as a couple of other songs from the then forthcoming new album ( they were in the middle slot with some band called AC/DC opening and Blue Oyster Cult headlining)

Thanks, those will be the next 3 I pick up. I am working on getting them all and also the Phil Lynott solo stuff.

The more I am listening to Black Rose, the more I like it. :)

Lizzy were at their peak for Bad Reputation. By the time they did Black Rose Phil and Scott were a mess. I didn't think the song writing was that strong at all. BTW, the instrumental Irish parts Gary did in Roisin Dubh were actually the same instrumental parts he did years earlier for a Lizzy song called Sitamoia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llZXNBGCzHA&feature=related)

I went through a serious Lizzy phase last year, got all the albums. Still in heavy rotation. every album has something to offer. I tend to favor Bad Rep and Thunder and Lightning.

Don't pass over Vagabonds. The title cut is one of their best. The Rocker, Little Girl in Bloom, Hero and the Madman are all cool songs.

I will get them all, just will take some time as my music budget is not what it used to be.

Thunder and Lightning is a good album, even though its a different style from their mid 70's heyday.

I have trouble picking a favorite between Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, and Black Rose. Johnny the Fox is good, but I think it will have to grow on me.
