I found this article and disagree with some of the choices. What do you think?

...nope, it's just a 'listing' of 20 amplifier manufacturers.

Yeah those are definitely not the 20 best amps in the world.

The amps listed were voted on by the readers, not editors, gear junkies, or statisticians. Just ordinary folks who play guitar; of which we are a tiny, isolated minority.

I'll bet they're their 20 best advertisers though.

Coming from the "non-TGP" crowd, that's wasn't that bad really, even Two Rock and Fuchs made the list.

Number twenty was a pleasant surprise, didnt see that coming. Although I agree not my top 20, heck I would have trouble picking my top 5.

I'll bet they're their 20 best advertisers though.

As it's 'Guitarist' magazine, this is most likley the case. It'll have a Blackstar somewhere in there, no matter what! :facepalm

Fender Hot rod bles Delx III? I just threw up a bit.

Very few classic amps in that list. The Fenders, the Voxes... possibly some of those boutique ones I'd leave in. But I gather the list is for currently produced and fairly new models.

Was someone expecting to find a K&M Custom on the list(LOL)?

"In the world" is a bit much. Add to that the subjectivity of the word "best" and this list is about as useful as the '100 best guitarists' that Rolling Stone publishes.

But I gather the list is for currently produced and fairly new models.

that was my take as well, sort of like the title says "in the world today"; in that case I'm guessing the list is probably somewhat close to sales figures/trends of well-known current production amps. Sure your Tone King/Bruno/Super Bass/whatever is obviously superior but not relevant or visible to the voters in that article

Ghia and no Maz?!? I dont think so.

LPMojoGL
05-22-2012, 09:35 PM
I don't think it was a horrible list. Most of the major manufacturers were fairly represented.
Coreblade surprised me. Never heard of that.
Blackstar HT40 shouldn't have made that list. Blegh. Maybe their little 5 watter.
I guess that list is influenced by the physical location of the magazine putting the list together.

Kitten Cannon
05-22-2012, 10:16 PM
Chances are they let their readers do the voting, and it wasn't a multiple choice list... and only 20 people voted.

Lists are silly. And this list is incredibly silly.

Really, who voted on the Thunderverb over the Rockerverb. I rarely hear about people rocking the Thunderverb and I seem to always read about the Rockerverbs.

I have played both and I MUCH preferred the Thunderverb over the Rockerverb. Way warmer and more vintage sounding to my ears. But I suppose it's all what you're going for. I never turned the gain up past noon.
I like vintage. Me no likey modern high gain.

Fender Hot rod bles Delx III? I just threw up a bit.

Before I even looked, I knew that a Fender Hot Rod something would be on list. I will say this...I've seen more of those type of amps in clubs than any other amp. It's not what I use, but just an observation.

Hey if you're a pedal guy, need a good solid clean, they work well.
Even Michael Landau is touring the clubs with them. (changed speakers of course).

So those ARE the best.

RedTiger
05-23-2012, 10:50 AM
"Most Popular" would probably have been a better title.

Some of those 20 are probably among the most popular in the world. Mesa Boogies and 6505's on the top 10 makes perfect sense. Countless albums and have been recorded with those and countless live shows have been played with them. I'm genuinely surprised to see Dr. Z and Two Rock, not the other way 'round.

I totally agree with the choice. Hughes and Kettner build the best amps I've seen. I like seeing them get some love, they deserve it

I am surprised that the Mesa Lonestar Special wasn't on that list. It is the one amp that I haven't heard many people here rag on. That has to say a lot.

But yea. The lonestar should definitely be on the list.

Can't quite understand why the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is in there as well...but oh well

I'll never understand why people crap on a Hot Rod Deluxe. It's a seriously good sounding amp. Sure some are better, but you can walk on to any stage in the country with a Fender 1) Hot Rod Deluxe 2) Hot Rod Deville or 3) Deluxe Reverb, and you will know exactly what you are gonna get out of it.

Nothing on you personally, Nelson, it's just a sentiment that I don't understand.

06-07-2012, 09:06 AM
Shit if I had to do a gig tonight and I had no gear, I know I could walk out of a fender dealer with a hot rod deluxe, a standard telecaster, and a tube screamer and get through 90% of anythign I'd have to do, and still sound good.

keepingitweird
06-07-2012, 09:09 AM
Just FYI - the Coreblade is the uber metal version of the switchblade...2 preamp tubes, digital onboard effects, very non-organic. A slight hop above the L6 POD stuff IMHO

a BIG +1!! (and GO RAY-DAHHHHS!)
ps - what's up with our cornerback situation...Dennis Allen's got to work on the secondary (not to mention Rolando's legal situation....):bonk

:agreeAgreed.. I'd personally hope that the store had a Blues Driver instead of a Tubescreamer, but I share the same sentiment.

I haven't played enough amps to make a top 20 and the other issue is, that while I can appreciate certain amps, they just aren't for me. Such a subjective thing, these lists don't really do much for me.

No Dumble, Alessandro, Landry, Carol Ann, only one Two Rock, and there are tons of other real amp makers out there who are making killer products. My JCA for instance! And I can't leave out Maven Peal.

I think the #1 choice pretty much spells out the core voters for that poll:
--
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Your votes have crowned the Hughes & Kettner Coreblade 'the best guitar amplifier in the world today.' An unlikely champ? Perhaps, but there's no denying that Hughes & Kettner is a brand synonymous with quality and reliability. The Coreblade is a valve-powered beast of a flagship head with onboard digital effects, full MIDI control and everything that the modern touring heavy rock guitarist requires, including stadium-filling high-gain sounds.

it's a sop to advertisers. The key thing is that every mainstream guitar amp maker is represented, absent, I guess, Ampeg (do they still make guitar amps?).

Coincidence? I think not.:-)

Since this is the "No. 1 website for musicians" that compiled this list, it surely is the most definitive, be-all end-all list......My guess is that the emporium will be over run with sellers purging their collections to be able to afford one of everything on this list.......

Those are the best amps in the whole world. DO you know how I know?

Simple. The list is on the interwebz. Nothing on the interwebz is ever untrue. You can believe it all... it makes you a more selective human than the guy who doesn't believe anything.
